‘Marriage is between a man and a woman’ – Mahama on anti-LGBTQ Bill

Mahama on anti-LGBTQ Bill

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his firm stance on the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, emphasizing that marriage is solely between a man and a woman.

Addressing the clergy in Accra on Friday, February 28, 2025, he stressed that Ghanaian cultural and moral values recognize only two genders—male and female.

“I believe in the principles and values that only two genders exist—man and woman. And that marriage is between a man and a woman,” Mahama stated, drawing nods of approval from religious leaders present.

The President further revealed that discussions were ongoing with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the Proper Family Values Bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana. He expressed optimism about the bill’s revival, saying, “It is my hope that these consultations will lead to a renewed Proper Family Values Bill.”

The bill, initially passed by the eighth Parliament, was left unsigned under the previous administration of Nana Akufo-Addo. It seeks to ban the promotion, advocacy, and funding of LGBTQ+ activities in the country.

Beyond social and moral issues, Mahama outlined his administration’s plans to address Ghana’s economic challenges. He reassured Ghanaians of a clear strategy to stabilize the economy, create jobs, and restore financial confidence.

“Our immediate priority is to stabilize the economy. We will work to strengthen the currency, reduce inflation, cut the deficit, and improve Ghana’s financial standing,” he assured.

Mahama also underscored the importance of agriculture in achieving economic self-sufficiency, pledging his government’s commitment to modernizing the sector.

“A nation that cannot feed itself cannot prosper. That is why we are making aggressive interventions in agriculture. By investing in modern farming techniques, agro-processing, and farmer support, we will build a solid foundation for economic resilience,” he added.

With these commitments, Mahama reaffirmed his dedication to upholding Ghanaian values while ensuring economic recovery and stability.
