Minimum wage not enough for basic living – Labour consultant

Minimum wage Gh

A Labour Consultant, Senyo M. Adjabeng, says the current minimum wage in Ghana is not enough to meet the basic needs of workers.

Speaking on Morning Target on Bullet TV, hosted by Bright Nana Amfo, he explained that the cost of living is too high compared to what workers earn.

According to him, expenses such as rent, transportation, food and clothing make it difficult for workers on minimum wage to survive.

He said even if a worker saves their earnings, it would still be hard to afford decent housing.

Mr Adjabeng noted that although Ghana uses a minimum wage system, it does not reflect current economic realities.

He argued that the system is not working as expected because it does not match the rising cost of goods and services.

The labour consultant suggested that the country should move towards a “living wage,” which takes into account the real cost of living.

He explained that a living wage would help workers meet basic needs such as housing, healthcare and transportation.

Mr Adjabeng also said Ghanaian workers are slowly recovering from economic challenges in recent years, especially between 2020 and 2024 when inflation was high and salaries remained low.

However, he stressed that workers are “not there yet” and more needs to be done to improve their conditions.

He called on policymakers to review the wage system to ensure workers can live comfortably and remain productive.
