NAPO apologizes for “Nkrumah-Akufo-Addo” comparison

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has apologized for comments made about Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The apology comes days after NAPO claimed that no President in Ghana’s history including former President Nkrumah had performed better than President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking at his official unveiling event at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, Dr Opoku Prempeh said not even Kwame Nkrumah has moved Ghana forward and protected it like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“Since independence in 1957, no president has helped Ghana as much as Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. From 1957 to now, not even your Kwame Nkrumah has moved Ghana forward and protected it like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he said.

The comments received backlash from the politicians as well as the general public.

But in a statement, dated July, 12, 2024 Dr Opoku Prempeh has said that his comments were his personal opinion and were not intended to disrespect Kwame Nkrumah or any former president.

“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state; including my grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor,” he stated.

“I note the concerns raised after my statement, I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” the statement said.
