Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has taken a swipe at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing the party as “shameless” for fielding a candidate in the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
According to him, the NDC’s decision stands in sharp contrast to that of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has opted not to contest the Tamale Central by-election following the tragic demise of the area’s Member of Parliament in a helicopter crash.
Speaking at a gathering of NPP supporters, Hon. Afenyo-Markin said the governing party chose the path of decency and respect for the departed MP by staying out of the Tamale contest, but the NDC has failed to show the same level of sensitivity.
“This is pure shamelessness on the part of the NDC. While the NPP has shown leadership and respect by not contesting Tamale Central, they have jumped into the Akwatia race without hesitation,” he said.
The Minority Leader also urged NPP supporters not to be intimidated by the actions or threats of their opponents. He stressed that no amount of aggression should deter them from coming out in their numbers to cast their votes.
“Our opponents may come with guns, but we must remain resolute. We are a law-abiding party, and we believe in the will of the people. I urge every NPP supporter in Akwatia to stand firm and defend the victory that belongs to us,” he declared.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin further appealed for calm and vigilance during the by-election, assuring that the NPP will continue to uphold democratic values while protecting the interests of its supporters and the people of Ghana.
The Akwatia by-election has already attracted heightened political attention, with the NDC and NPP exchanging strong words ahead of the polls.
