The Ashanti Regional Deputy Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Yaa Boahemaa Agyeman, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for granting a state burial to the late Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, describing the gesture as a fitting honour for a woman who dedicated her life to national service and women’s empowerment.
Speaking in an interview with Atinka News Regional Correspondent, Obofo Michael, Hon. Agyeman said the former First Lady’s contributions to Ghana’s socio-political development extended far beyond party lines, and her passing should be commemorated with a national holiday to allow citizens to pay their final respects.
“I commend President Mahama for the state burial, but I believe Nana Konadu deserves even more. The government should declare a public holiday on her funeral day so that all Ghanaians can honour her memory,” she stated.
Hon. Yaa Boahemaa Agyeman described the late Nana Konadu as a trailblazer who worked tirelessly to empower women and break societal barriers, paving the way for women to assume leadership roles across various fields.
“Her legacy has inspired many women to rise — we now see women serving as ministers, doctors, and lawyers because of the doors she opened,” she said.
She added that Nana Konadu’s advocacy through the 31st of December Women’s Movement also empowered single mothers to become more resilient and self-reliant, particularly in situations where fathers failed to take responsibility for their children.
Hon. Agyeman emphasized that Nana Konadu’s impact would continue to resonate for generations, describing her as a mother of the nation whose dedication to women’s advancement and social welfare transformed countless lives.
