The Director of Legal Affairs for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has described the verdict of the Supreme Court on the the compilation of new voters register as a wicked decision which lacks the knowledge of the rural areas.
The Supreme Court on Thursday 25th June 2020 dismissed two suits that were seeking the use of the existing voter identification card and birth certificates as the source documents for the impending voter registration exercise.
According to the Director of Legal Affairs, Thursday 25th June 2020 marked a sad day for Ghana’s democracy. Commenting on the Supreme Court’s verdict on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, Abraham Amaliba, said the outcome clearly shows the court lacks knowledge about the plight of people living in rural areas.
Citing his village as an example, Amaliba argued that the people in his village have no knowledge about passports and that the decision not to use the old voters ID card is not a good decision.
He added that the verdict is a clear example of travesty of justice and makes mockery of the system. Asked why the party allowed the General Secretary for the Party, Johnson Aseidu Nketia to comment on the ruling right after judgement was passed, Abraham Amaliba said there was total confusion after the verdict and that Aseidu Nketia was addressing the media as a functional executive member of the NDC.
Meanwhile, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama says the party is disappointed in the verdict of the Supreme Court.
Reacting to the Supreme Call ruling, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama reiterated that the compilation of a new voter register will disenfranchise a number of Ghanaians.
“My brothers and sisters, we are deeply disappointed and we strongly disagree with the verdict of the Supreme Court over this outcome which has confounded many legal experts and indeed has thrown the whole country into a state of confusion. Our legal team is examining this decision even as we await the full reason for this judgement”, he added.
