New register captures 16,963,306 voters

The Electoral Commission(EC) has registered a total number of 16,963,306 at the end of the 2020 New Voters’ registration exercise.
The old voters’ register had a total of 16,845,420 registered voters.
This was made known by the EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa at the 9th edition of the ‘Let the citizen know’ series, a platform created by the EC to engage citizens on the electoral process.
On a whole, the EC also stated that the exercise was successful despite challenges and predictions of deaths amidst the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The exercise started Tuesday, June 30, 2020 and ended on Thursday, August 6, 2020.
However, the EC organized a mop-up registration to allow persons who could not register within the main time to have the opportunity to do so on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, therefore ended on the same day, which is August 9, 2020.
Mrs Jean Mensah stated that of all the regions, the Greater Accra Region had the highest number of registrants.
Meanwhile she stated that the above is a provisional result, stating that the Commission will further clean the register to fish out foreigners and minors who have been registered.
Mrs Jean Mensa stated that of all the regions in the country, the Oti Region had the highest number challenged cases in the just ended new voters’ registration exercise.
According to her, the regions that had the most challenged cases were those at the border towns.
She added that all Ghanaians who are stuck abroad due to the covid-19 restrictions, including lockdown and the closure of borders will be allowed to register for the new voters ID card when they come to Ghana but would not be allowed to partake in the 2020 elections.
For the anomalies recorded in the security system during the exercise, she said the Commission is investigating and will address the issues respectively in due time.
