North East Region Marks International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the North East Region has joined the global community to commemorate this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) in Nalerigu on Monday, October 13, 2025.

The event, held under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,” emphasized the importance of investing in proactive measures to build community resilience and minimize the impact of natural and human-induced disasters.

Established in 1996, NADMO serves as the government agency responsible for coordinating disaster response efforts, mobilizing resources, and building the capacity of communities to better withstand emergencies.

Speaking at a durbar held at the Nayiri Palace, the North East Regional Director of NADMOAlhaji Tahiru Rafiu, underscored the need for sustained funding and strategic investment in disaster risk reduction.

“It is far more cost-effective to fund resilience than to spend heavily on post-disaster management,” Alhaji Rafiu stated. “Our focus must shift from reaction to prevention through effective planning, community education, and resource mobilization.”

The North East Regional MinisterHon. Tia Ibrahim, also emphasized the importance of prevention over response, urging stakeholders to strengthen local disaster preparedness systems.

“We must prioritize preventing disasters rather than merely managing them after they occur,” he said.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including personnel from the Ghana Police ServiceGhana National Fire ServiceGhana Immigration ServiceGhana Ambulance ServiceGhana Armed Forces, and the Narcotics Control Commission. School children also participated, carrying placards with messages such as “Stop Man-Made Disasters Now” and “Our Motto Pays — International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.”

The commemoration featured a peace walk, which began at the Naa Sheriga Astro Turf, passed through the principal streets of Nalerigu, and ended at the Nalerigu Lorry Station.

The day concluded with renewed calls for stronger collaboration between government agencies, communities, and development partners to ensure a safer and more resilient North East Region.
