The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is accused of not being allowed to select his running mate for the December elections by a prominent member of the party, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe.
This follows rumours that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has been selected by Dr. Bawumia to be his running mate.
Sources say that President Akufo-Addo was consulted by Dr. Bawumia on Tuesday night when it came to selecting his running mate.
Within the party, this has caused a great deal of dispute, with many doubting Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s qualification for the position.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe claimed in a Thursday, June 27, interview with Accra based 3FM that Dr. Bawumia was pressured to choose Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as his running partner in spite of worries about the Minister’s allegedly haughty behavior.
He reaffirmed his demand from a few months prior, saying that Dr. Bawumia will not be permitted to make his own choices.
In contrast to past NPP leaders, such as former President Akufo-Addo, who were free to select their running mates, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe questioned why Dr. Bawumia was not permitted to select his running companion.
“I know for a fact that he can’t pick his own running mate and I made mention of this almost seven months ago and the reason is that simple.”
“Bawumia’s position, he will find it difficult to pick his own running mate. Rawlings picked his own running mate, nobody would dare bring anyone to him and say ‘This one should go with you’. He fielded Ackaah and he failed, he changed him to another person. Kufuor picked his own running mate.”
“First round, second round, I was present. Not that someone was telling me. Atta Mills picked his own running mate, Mahama picked his own running mate. Akufo-Addo, scene one, picked his own running mate, scene two, picked his own running mate. Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate?”.
