To create awareness about protecting the environment, pupils of the St. Bakhita School Complex at Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region celebrated Environment Day.
The celebration was in partnership with the Ghana Italian Women Association, Zenzero, and Navy personnel of the Italian Ship (ITS) FOSCARI.
The day’s activities started with a float on the principal streets of the town to create awareness about environmental protection. The students held placards with inscriptions such as “Teach children to respect nature and the environment,” “Do not just dump your garbage,” “We must practice afforestation,” “Keep rubbers and papers in dustbins,” “We must keep our gutters clean,” and the like.
The pupils recited poems and performed drama on environmental protection after converging at the school premises from the float.
The Navy personnel of ITS FOSCARI used the opportunity to fix the electrical damages in the school and interact with the children.
In an interview, the public information officer for ITS FOSCARI, OF 1 Matteo Troccoli, stated that they are excited to be a part of the celebration to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection.
According to him, their short stay in Ghana is part of their logistical stop, and it is a great opportunity to fraternize and build cherished memories with the Ghanaian populace.
Zenzero, an Italian non-governmental organization that creates awareness about environmental protection, presented gifts to the schoolchildren, who were able to collect many empty plastic bottles and sachets of pure water prior to the celebration.

Interacting with the media, President of Zenzero, Jane Lepori explained that environmental pollution has dire consequences on the individual and the country as a whole.
She thanked the schoolchildren for participating in the collection of these empty plastic bottles and sachets of pure water rubber, which may have ended up in the gutters or on the streets. She hinted that all the plastic waste collected would be recycled into other products for use.
Speaking on behalf of the Ghana Italian Women Association, Sara Baldi, intimated the need for all to be involved in creating awareness about environmental protection. “All we have is our environment, and it is our responsibility to keep it clean for our own good,” she said.
Headmaster for St. Bakhita School Complex, Rev. Fr. George Batsa, expressed his excitement over the collaboration to mark the day in commemoration of the patron of the school, St. Bakhita.
He asked for help to fix the terrible road that connected the school to the neighborhood.
