"On what basis do they want to be independent?" – Volta chief fires Secessionists

Togbe Tepre Hodo IV , Vice President for the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, has questioned the legitimacy of persons believed to be part of a secessionist group in the Volta Region fighting for its independence.

This statement by the chief follows an attack at the Volta Regional yard of the STC.

Four armed men believed to be part of the Homeland Study Group Foundation on Tuesday 28th September 2020, stormed Ho STC yard demanding the keys to all the vehicles parked.

The armed men allegedly set two of the mini buses ablaze when the drivers did not produce the keys.

A flag of the group which calls itself “Western Togoland” was found at the scene.

The group on Friday 25th September 2020 blocked major entry points into Volta Region as part of measures to push the government to give them their sovereignty.

The group also attacked a police station and made away with weapons from their armoury which has been retrieved.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV , Vice President for the Volta Regional House of Chiefs said a separation does not even guarantee that their demands will be met.

He said the issue is of paramount interest to all indigenes of the Volta Region and Ghana as a whole and that no matter who is behind these people,  they believe government should be able to help curb the situation.

” I don’t know, what case do they have? This is an independent entity called Ghana and what do they want? What is the basis for them asking to be separated?. If they do not have a basis to be separated why don’t we all stay in this entity called Ghana and work towards its progress and development for the interest of everyone. Why should some people think that it is only when they separate that is when they will get all whatever it is that they are after”, he said.

According to Togbe Tepre Hodo IV , the Volta Regional House of Chiefs is against the attacks by the Homeland Study Group Foundation in its quest to fight for its independence from the Ghana and that the house is ready to collaborate with authorities to ensure that perpetrators in these secessionist attacks are brought to book.
