The National Commission on Small Arms and Illicit Weapons and the Interior Ministry have destroyed over 2897 illicit weapons.

The guns were seized from civilians in the Ashanti Region during a search by the police and the Commission. Some of these guns are not registered while others have their registration dates expired.

Deputy Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, who supervised the  exercise  at the Police Training School in Accra Wednesday, warned all citizens in possession of unregistered arms to hand them over to the police or face the wrath of National Security.

The minister also warned individuals who can’t keep weapons safely to desist from acquiring them or face prosecution if they are used for the wrong purpose.

“If you don't need a gun, don’t buy it and if you can't control a weapon, don't keep them,” he said.

Mr. Quatey said a lot of registered guns have not been renewed after being expired, therefore, the search will be continued in the other regions to get these weapons from the owners.

“Out of 1.2m guns registered in the country, only 40, 000 have their license renewed leaving 800,000 un-renewed,” he said.

According to the ECOWAS Convention, all weapons or arms distributed to every state security are to be registered and marked.

According to the minister, searching and seizing weapons for inspection will help trace or identify weapons belonging to the security but have found its way into wrong hands.
