Cable Thief Electrocuted at ECG Substation in Kumasi

A suspected cable thief met his untimely death after being electrocuted at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation at Adoato in the Ashanti Region.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, has plunged parts of Greater Kumasi and surrounding areas into darkness.

The deceased, believed to be in his late 30s, was allegedly attempting to steal electrical cables when he was fatally shocked.

His body was discovered at the scene, highlighting the deadly risks associated with illegal interference in power infrastructure.

According to ECG officials, this is not the first time the Adoato substation has been targeted by thieves.

In a previous attack, cable thieves succeeded in stealing vital components, severely compromising the stability of electricity supply in the area.

In an interview with Atinka News, the Public Relations Officer for ECG Ashanti West, Mr. Benjamin Obeng Antwi, condemned the recurring acts and warned of the serious consequences such illegal activities pose — not just to individuals involved, but to entire communities relying on uninterrupted power.

He further urged the public to remain vigilant and support the ECG in safeguarding its installations.

The ECG has reiterated its commitment to restoring power to affected areas as quickly as possible and is working closely with law enforcement to clamp down on cable theft.

The grim incident serves as a sobering warning to others and reignites public conversation about protecting critical national infrastructure from theft.

SDA School Shooting: High Tension Foundation Appeals for Support as Victim Awaits Surgery

The Executive Director of the High Tension Foundation, Madam Cecilia Agyeiwaa, popularly known as Akosua High Tension, has made a passionate appeal to some of Ghana’s leading philanthropists to come to the aid of the SDA Senior High School shooting victim who is in dire need of surgery.

Speaking on Atinka 104.7 following the adjournment of the court case to April 30, Madam Agyeiwaa called on prominent figures such as Ibrahim Mahama, Samuel Amo Tobbin Foundation, McDan Foundation, and other benevolent Ghanaians to extend their usual humanitarian support to the young victim and her family.

“The surgery must be done, and the family needs help. You these philanthropists have always been the only lifeline for the poor, the forgotten, and the helpless. Today, we need them again,” – she stated.

The victim, who was shot in a tragic incident involving a juvenile suspect, remains in critical condition, and the financial burden of surgery is weighing heavily on her mother, Madam Afia Comfort, who has already made headlines for her bold vow to curse anyone who attempts to bribe their way into silencing justice.

Akosua High Tension emphasized that while the legal process continues, the immediate need is the health and recovery of the victim.

“Justice must be served, but we cannot let the child’s life hang in the balance. We are appealing to the very people who have time and again restored hope to the hopeless,” – she pleaded.

She lauded these philanthropists for their continuous support to underprivileged Ghanaians and added that their role in the lives of the vulnerable is beyond charity—it is often their only hope.

NETRIGHT Demands Dismissal of Kumasi Mayor Over ‘Flogging’ Remarks

The Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana (NETRIGHT) has issued a strong statement condemning the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, for threatening to flog traders who defy a directive banning street trading on pavements in the city.

At a press conference on April 14, the Mayor gave a two-week ultimatum to traders to vacate the central business district pavements or face sanctions, including flogging.

NETRIGHT, in a statement dated April 16, described the Mayor’s remarks as “barbaric,” “a gross violation of human rights,” and “an affront to human dignity and democratic values.” The women’s rights organization warned that such language, especially from a public official, has no place in a democratic society governed by the 1992 Constitution.

“Section 15 (2a) of the Constitution clearly states that no person, whether arrested or not, shall be subjected to torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” – the statement read.

The group emphasized that women, who make up a significant proportion of traders in Ghana, would disproportionately suffer the consequences of such punitive threats. They further warned that these actions could incite civil unrest and undermine the rule of law.

NETRIGHT also expressed deep concern over the Mayor’s initial refusal to apologize for his remarks, and instead reaffirming them in a national media interview.

However, in a new twist, the embattled Mayor has since rendered an apology during an internal on Atinka 104.7 FM’s morning show, adding “I withdraw my statement”.

Despite the apology, NETRIGHT is calling on President John Dramani Mahama to remove Mr. Boadi from office, stating, “The statement made by the Kumasi Mayor shows that he is not fit to hold public office.”

The group has urged all Ghanaians to join their call for accountability and reject what they term “a dangerous abuse of power.”

“We cannot accept this barbaric statement! Not now, not ever!”- the statement concluded.

Tema Chief Fisherman Raises Alarm Over Illegal Fishing Crisis

illegal fishing

The Chief Fisherman of Tema Awudum, Nii Ashitey Odamtey II, has issued a stark warning about the alarming rise of illegal fishing along Ghana’s coast, revealing that over 80 percent of the country’s coastal communities are engaged in Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing practices.

Speaking at a public durbar held at the Tema Canoe Basin, Nii Odamtey cautioned that the persistent use of unapproved nets, chemicals, and other destructive methods threatens the future of Ghana’s marine ecosystem and the livelihoods of coastal dwellers.

“If this trend continues, we risk collapsing our fisheries sector,” he warned. “Only 20 percent of the coastline is not engaged in illegal fishing — and even they have largely stopped fishing due to the sector’s many challenges.”

The event, themed “Sustaining Our Seas: Combating Illegal Fishing Through Community Action,” was organized by final-year students of the African University of Communications and Business (AUCB) as part of their capstone project to promote responsible fishing practices.

Officials from the Fisheries Commission, led by Eric Omari, used the occasion to educate attendees on the dangers of IUU fishing and highlighted the need for safer fish handling and environmentally sustainable fishing practices.

Fish processors and artisanal fishers who spoke at the durbar shifted blame toward industrial trawlers, accusing them of playing a bigger role in depleting Ghana’s marine resources. They appealed to government to enforce stricter regulations on trawlers and introduce alternative livelihood programs to support struggling coastal communities.

Philip Azu, a member of the AUCB student campaign team, emphasized the importance of grassroots advocacy, urging the government to act swiftly to protect Ghana’s fisheries from total collapse.

The event brought together stakeholders from the fishing industry, community leaders, academia, and the media, all united in their call for urgent reforms to preserve Ghana’s marine environment for future generations.

Minority Urges Halt to Chief Justice’s Removal: Cites Threat to Ghana’s Democracy

john darko

The Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by its Legal Counsel and Member of Parliament for Suame in the Ashanti Region, Mr. John Darko, is calling on religious and traditional leaders to persuade the President to halt any attempts to remove the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, from office.

The caucus insists that the petitions seeking her removal are baseless and do not meet the constitutional threshold required to unseat a sitting Chief Justice.

Speaking at an emergency press conference on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Mr. Darko disclosed that sources had informed the caucus of ongoing moves to undermine the Chief Justice.

“To our revered traditional and religious leaders, the time to call the President to advise him is now. The time to pray for our country is now. We should not wait until it’s too late,” Mr. Darko stated.

He cautioned against entertaining what he described as “pointless petitions,” warning that doing so could severely undermine Ghana’s progress in consolidating its democratic institutions.

“How can any serious country, mindful of its past and desirous of improving its democratic credentials, entertain such loose petitions and orchestrate the destruction of the last bastion of the pillars of our democracy?” he asked.

Press Conference by the Minority on the Attempt to Remove the Chief Justice

Ladies and gentlemen of the media,

Sometime in March 2025, H.E. the President submitted to the Council of State petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice of the Republic, Her Ladyship Justice Torkornoo. Since learning of this petition, the Minority has followed the process with keen interest—and we are worried, deeply worried.

In Ghana’s history, from independence through military rule to constitutional democracy, the judiciary has consistently stood out as a resilient and independent institution. This independence has been hard-won.

We remember cases like Re-Akoto (1961), where the Supreme Court upheld the Preventive Detention Act, and The State v. Otchere (1963), where President Nkrumah nullified a court decision and ordered a re-trial of acquitted individuals.

We also remember June 30, 1982—the tragic murder of Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong. It was a period when the judiciary was under siege, perceived as a threat to a revolutionary regime intent on full societal control.

That dark era must not repeat itself.

It is shocking that today, petitions are being entertained against the Chief Justice on grounds so weak, so politically motivated, that they echo the logic of that dangerous past. The NDC, which emerged from the PNDC, now seems to believe it is entitled to control all pillars of the state—including the judiciary.

Since the 1992 Constitution came into effect, our judiciary has reinforced its independence, evident in landmark cases like:

  • NPP v. IGP / NPP v. Attorney General – where sections of the Public Order Act were declared unconstitutional, paving the way for greater freedom of assembly.
  • 31st December Case – where the use of state resources to celebrate a coup was ruled unconstitutional.
  • Election Petitions in 2013 (Akufo-Addo v. Mahama) and 2021 (Mahama v. Akufo-Addo), where the judiciary played a balancing role.

It is in this context that we consider the petition against the Chief Justice to be a serious setback in our democratic journey.

This move appears to be aimed at:

  • Tarnishing the image of the CJ.
  • Orchestrating her removal.
  • Ultimately silencing and capturing the judiciary.

We understand that the petitions are based on three key allegations:

  1. That the CJ advised the President on judicial appointments to the Supreme Court.
  2. That she presided over an ex parte motion involving the Speaker of Parliament.
  3. That she misappropriated approximately GHS 75,000.

None of these claims satisfy Article 146 of the Constitution, which outlines that a Justice of the Superior Court may only be removed for:

“Stated misbehaviour, incompetence, or inability to perform the functions of office due to infirmity of body or mind.”

These claims are frivolous, and entertaining them will damage the public’s faith in the judiciary.

We have been reliably informed that there are plans to invoke Article 146(10)(a) to suspend the CJ and appoint an acting CJ aligned with the current administration.

To judges who may be tempted to betray judicial independence for personal gain, we say: You may rise together, but if you destroy another to rise, posterity will judge you harshly.

To our development partners and foreign missions: now is the time to speak up. The destruction of the judiciary is the beginning of the end for Ghana’s democratic experiment.

To our traditional and religious leaders: we urge you to act. The nation is at a turning point, and silence is not an option.

And most importantly, to you—the people of Ghana:

You are the source of justice.

As Article 125(1) of the Constitution states:

“Justice emanates from the people and shall be administered in the name of the Republic by the Judiciary, which shall be independent and subject only to this Constitution.”

This is your fight. This is your democracy. Rise and say: enough is enough.

Thank you.

Rev. C. Ofori Urges Believers to Reject Corruption and Sin

Selikem Acolatse-Apaloo

Reverend Christian Ofori of the Budumburam Wesley Methodist Church has urged Ghanaians, especially Christians, to embrace a life of sacrifice and reject corrupt practices that undermine their faith and humanity.

Speaking in an interview on Morning Target on Bullet TV, hosted by Selikem Acolatse-Apaloo, the clergyman stressed that the resurrection of Jesus Christ must serve as a call to discipline, moral uprightness, and purposeful living.

“The Christian life is a life of sacrifice,” Rev. Ofori declared. “Some people are resorting to drugs, sakawa, and other shortcuts just to get ahead, but we must remember that Jesus did not compromise with sin.”

He warned that chasing wealth through immoral means not only leads to destruction but also erodes the dignity of human life. According to him, the Easter season should inspire Christians to reflect deeply on the example of Christ, who endured suffering and death in obedience to God’s will.

Rev. Ofori further urged national leaders, community heads, and business owners to lead by example, emphasizing that sacrificial leadership was key to Ghana’s moral and social transformation.

“As a people, we must reject anything that brings shame and corruption into our lives. True Christian living requires that even in the face of adversity, we stand firm and do what is right,” he added.

He concluded by calling on Ghanaians to pursue integrity, selflessness, and service—values he believes are vital not just during Easter, but in everyday life.

He emphasized the importance of financial discipline in navigating tough economic times, warning that many people spend their hard-earned money on fleeting moments of jubilation only to return to square one.

“For me, I won’t use all my savings to go and jubilate, come back to nothing, and start all over again,” he added.

Kwofie’s comments come at a time when many young people are facing rising costs of living, and his call echoes growing concerns about the need for financial planning and prudent spending.
