Free SHS is lacking implementation direction- Muntaka

Member of Parliament for the people of Asawase in the Ashanti Region, Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has described the Free Senior High School policy as a very useful one but lacking good implementation direction.

The Minority Chief Whip has bemoaned the poor implementation of a policy he described as “very useful”, commending the Akufo-Addo administration for its bold start of the policy, but added the challenges associated with the implementation are making the policy to appear as a bad one.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Hon. Muntaka admitted to the fact that the beginning of every project comes with some challenges and prayed the Akufo-Addo government fix the challenge with the Free SHS policy.

“The Free SHS is a very useful policy as a nation and I commend the government for its boldness to start the policy, but look at the challenge that comes with it. I agree that the beginning of everything comes with a challenge and we are all praying that the government will be able to fix it, but the SHS has become traffic light; some are on green and others are on yellow and very soon, some of the students will be put on red and the red is when they fail their exams,” he bemoaned.

He mentioned that it is a reality facing the country that government has collapsed the basic schools as people living in all the big cities are taking their children to private schools.

He feared that the poor implementation of the Free SHS policy may collapse the secondary schools again; thus, those who can afford may end up taking their children to private secondary schools as it is happening in the basic schools.

“Is this the kind of country we want to run? Did they [Akufo-Addo government and NPP] think thoroughly about it before they implemented the Free SHS policy? Because the implementation is having too many challenges and the ripping effect will not happen today but in about 5 years later when they have completed tertiary education and yet they cannot even write ‘Myself Essay’,” he lamented.

Mubarak Muntaka stressed that “regardless the challenge, I will bear witness that the policy is very good but the implementation is diluting quality education”.

Opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi named winner in DR Congo poll

Opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi has won the Democratic Republic of Congo’s tightly contested presidential vote, the electoral commission says.

Provisional results put him ahead of another opposition candidate, Martin Fayulu, and the ruling coalition’s Emmanuel Shadary.

If confirmed, Mr. Tshisekedi will be the first opposition challenger to win since the DR Congo gained independence.

Current President Joseph Kabila is stepping down after 18 years in office.

He had promised DR Congo’s first orderly transfer of power since the country’s independence from Belgium in 1960.

The election outcome was initially expected to be announced on Sunday. The interim result can still be challenged.

In the early hours of Thursday the head of DR Congo’s National Electoral Commission (Ceni), Corneille Nangaa, said Mr. Tshisekedi had received 38.5% of the vote and had been “provisionally declared the elected president”.

Chinese man disabled for life after selling kidney to buy iPhone

Xiao Wang was only 17 years old when he decided to sell one of his kidneys in order to buy the iPhone 4 he couldn’t otherwise afford.

After the operation Wang was told he was going to have a normal life with just one kidney, but almost eight years on, the 24-year-old is permanently disabled and dependent on dialysis.

Back in 2011, the iPhone 4 was Apple’s flagship smartphone and a status symbol at Xiao Wang’s school in Chengzhou, China.

However, he came from a poor family who couldn’t afford to buy him the trendy gadget, so he decided to sell one of his healthy organs in order to get his hands on enough money to buy the coveted device.

With help from a middleman, Wang got in touch with shady characters that specialized in trading organs on the black market and agreed to sell one of his kidneys for 22,000 yuan ($3,200), more than enough to buy the iPhone 4 he so badly desired.

Unfortunately, this foolish decision would completely ruin his life.

The 17-year-old figured that he only needed one of his kidneys to survive and the dubious doctor he met before the operation confirmed that he would be able to lead a normal life with just one of his organs.

The procedure was carried out in an illegal hospital in Chenzou, and even though it was considered a success at the time, health complications arose soon after.

“Unfortunately, the operating environment wasn’t sanitized properly, which led to an infection on his wound,” Oriental Daily recently reported. “Worse still, Wang’s family were kept in the dark about his kidney removal operation and only found out about it when the teen couldn’t hide his health problems any longer.”

Because he didn’t dare tell his parents what he had done (and what for), the infection spread to his remaining kidney, and by the time his family took him to a proper hospital for treatment, the damage to his kidney was so severe that the only possible way to ensure his survival was permanent dialysis.

Xiao Wang has spent most of his life since then in bed, dependent on the dialysis machine that’s keeping him alive but at the same time greatly shortening his life-span.

After hearing Wang’s story about how he sold his kidney on the black market to buy an iPhone 4, his parents tracked down and sued the middleman and the doctor who performed the operation.

They eventually received a sizable compensation of 2.2 million yuan ($320,000) most of which has been spent on the 24-year-old’s expensive treatments and drugs.

It’s unclear if Xiao Wang ever got to buy that iPhone he traded his kidney for, or if he still has it. Not that any of that matters, anyway. I guess the moral of the story is that very few things are worth risking your life for, and an Apple iPhone is definitely not on the list.

Zylofon Music is in financial crisis – PRO

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Zylofon Music, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has disclosed that the record label is currently facing challenges.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Entertainment Review on Saturday, he noted that there has been a lull in the record label’s activities due to a financial crisis.

In his explanation, Arnold said the challenges are as a result of the current problems the parent company, Menzgold, is in.

“As we all know Menzgold has been facing some challenges in recent times and it is expected that as a sister company to Zylofon Music, the record label would encounter crisis too,” he stated.

This comes on the back of rumours that the company has asked some of its managers to resign and that some of its artistes were about to exit the record label.

Even though Gospel musician, Joyce Blessing, has refuted claims that she has left Zylofon Music record label, Arnold also stated on Peace FM that it is possible some of the artistes may bail out on the company in the midst of the crisis.

“As we speak, Joyce Blessing is part of the record label.

No artiste has left but the possibility of they leaving in times like this is imminent,” he added.

At the moment some of the artistes are relying on their own means to promote their projects and craft.

Joyce Blessing is currently promoting her new single, Repent, which unlike previously, bears no signature of Zylofon Music.

Zylofon Music stepped into Ghana’s entertainment industry in 2017 when they signed Highlife musician, Kumi Guitar.

They later brought on artistes like Stonebwoy, Joyce Blessing, Becca, Obibini and Shatta Wale.

Founded by Nana Appiah Mensah, who also owns Menzgold, the Zylofon Media conglomerate has under its umbrella other companies like the Zylofon Arts Club, Zylofon Arts Fund, Zylofon Movies, Zylofon Cash, Zylofon FM and Zylofon TV.

At present, Menzgold Ghana Limited, a gold trading firm has been ordered by the Securities and Exchange Commission to suspend its operations.

According to SEC, Menzgold does not have the license to trade in gold collectibles from the public.

Speaking on Atinka fm's AM Drive on wednesday January 9, the Head of Public Relations of the Service, Cassandra Twum Ampofo explained that each academic year comprises two semesters or 162 teaching days and not 81 days as being rumoured.

She insisted that the introduction of the semester system and the Double Track School calendar has rather increased the number of hours of instruction in an academic year to 1,134 hours.

Madam Ampofo also indicated that the closure of schools in Chereponi was on the back of the recent clashes in the area.

58% of Ghanaians happy with Akufo-Addo’s performance in two years – UG survey

The Political Science Department of the University of Ghana says the Akufo-Addo government’s approval rating in its second year stands at 57.7%. (58%)

In a research conducted by the Department which focused on various sectors of governance and economy, 63.5% of the 5000 voters sampled endorsed the Free Senior High School [SHS] programme, making it one of the popular initiatives of the government.

Dr. Maame Gyekye Gyandoh, Head of the Political Science Department at the University, who presented the findings said the respondents were selected from 80 constituencies with constituencies in all the 10 regional capitals being part.

The findings mean that there has been a drop in the approval ratings of Akufo-Addo; the same institution announced in January 2018 that 62% of Ghanaians still have confidence in the Akufo-Addo government.
