North Korea ambassador to Italy 'disappears', says South

South Korea's spy agency has told officials that North Korea's ambassador to Italy has disappeared.

The announcement follows unconfirmed reports that Pyongyang's top diplomat in Italy had sought asylum from an unidentified Western country.

Jo Song-gil, the acting North Korean ambassador to Rome, is the son and son-in-law of high-ranking North Korean officials.

The last senior diplomat to defect was the deputy ambassador in London.

Thae Yong-ho abandoned his post in 2016, along with his wife and children. He defected to South Korea.

As one of the highest-ranking officials to ever defect from the North, his move was seen as a blow to Kim Jong-un's regime. He would go on to urge the world to spread information in North Korea to undermine Mr Kim's status among his people.

Speaking after a briefing from the spy agency on Thursday, Kim Min-ki, a government MP, told reporters that Mr Jo fled the Rome embassy more than a month ago.

"Acting ambassador Jo Song-gil's term was ending in late November last year and he escaped the diplomatic compound in early November," the MP said.

South Korean's National Intelligence Service, which interrogates all defectors from the North, told lawmakers they had not had any contact from him since then. The agency would not confirm that he is trying to defect to another country.

Italy's foreign ministry has told the BBC that it has no record of an asylum request made by Mr Jo.

Diplomatic sources said the last Italy heard of him was when officials received a note last year from the North Korean government saying that Mr Jo was being replaced.

South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo has reported that Mr Jo is in a "safe place" with his family, citing a diplomatic source.

Bawumia is prudent, patient and purposeful – Eastwood Anaba

The Founder of the Eastwood Anaba Ministries and Head Pastor of the Fountain Gate Chapel, Rev. Eastwood Anaba has heaped plaudits on the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as a man of prudence, patience and purpose.

Rev. Eastwood Anaba made these remarks on the Vice President’s of Ghana during a church service to mark the end of the year 2018 at a special Watch night Service at the Church’s Desert Pastures Branch at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region on 31st December, 2018.

In a fully filled and spiritually charged auditorium, Rev. Anaba narrated his first encounter with Dr. Bawumia extolling his humility as something that all must be jealous of.

“When I met him his demeanor and humility were awesome. I am a holder of Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy but  when I saw the humility of the doctor (Ph. D) I felt like I should be more humbled. Because the humility of the doctor was just fascinating, Rev. Eastwood observed.

“Some few years ago I was traveling and I met the humble man, Dr. Bawumia at the airport.   We got to the plane together talked for a while and we arrived and we all scattered. And over the years I saw him with his personal work rate. But of course definitely with the benefit of the DNA of his father, the legendary Bawumia he had acceleration instead of inertia”, Rev. Anaba narrated.

“I was thinking about him and I said how can I describe this man; and one scripture came to mind – First Samuel 16:18 came to mind, … which reads “Behold I have seen the son of (Bawumia), that is astute in playing, and a mighty valiant man, a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a  comely person and the Lord (is with) him.”

He continued – “when I read this scripture it is like I have taken a piece of fabric and sown a nice garment and fitted it on our Vice President from the crown of his head to his feet. I said this is the description that ably describes the man.”

He further said “First of all we have in the Vice President of Ghana a prudent man; no question about that. A patient man. Anybody who can stay in opposition and remain faithful in opposition until he gains position is a patient man. And if u look at the way his training and mere passion for life drives him you would know he is also a purposeful man”.

“I bring to you a man who is prudent, patient, purposeful and a man who in 2019 would be prosperous”, the Man of God concluded.

Vice President Bawumia was at the Fountain Gate Chapel for the 31st night Church service to worship God, reflect on the year 2018, and usher the nation, Ghana into the new year 2019. During the service special prayers were said for the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government and the entire nation.

Dr. Bawumia used the occasion to thank the Christian community and all faiths in Ghana and charged the people of Ghana to love thy neighbor as thyself. He also spoke about religious and ethnic tolerance, as well as the need to ensure peace among the citizenry.

5G is coming in 2019, and it's going to change your life

It’s hard to imagine life without smart phones and mobile devices. But it wasn’t until 3G that smart phones began to resemble the user experience now so ingrained in our daily lives. Since then, faster network speeds have been one of key enablers of the creation and widespread use of cloud technology enabling transformative services like ride-sharing apps, HD entertainment, and video calls that have become mainstream.

While 3G and 4G powered these services, 5G represents another connectivity leap beginning this year.

It is envisioned – per ITU-R’s IMT-2020 requirements — to support blazing-fast speeds of up to 20 Gbps, low latency as low as 1 millisecond, and 100x more capacity as compared to 4G, 5G is setting the stage for immediate improvements to existing experiences as well as the development of new, yet-to-be-imagined technological advancements.

Here’s a look at the change coming:

Everything will get faster

From day 1, 5G is designed to make virtually everything faster, providing fiber-like speeds to support insatiable demand for unlimited data. You should notice improved download speeds, superior quality video streaming and virtually instant cloud access in flagship 5G devices launching in 2019. And it should be easier than ever to download your favorite binge-worthy series at the airport or deliver massive files to colleagues when you’re on the go.

Instant access to cloud

5G brings extraordinary low latency. Latency is the time between data request and its delivery. 5G is purpose-built and designed to deliver entirely new real-time experiences we've never had before. We expect our new smartphones, tablets, and always-connected PCs* will be able to utilize 5G’s lower latency connectivity, higher capacity, in addition to its super-fast speeds, for the next level of cloud services.

Smooth real-time multiplayer gaming

Once online/cloud gaming make it easier for multi-player collaboration, then, live-stream gameplay with rapid map and level downloads will get a boost. Think of first-person shooter game where latency can be the difference between your character’s life and death.

Transformation to the Wireless Edge

As virtually everything gets connected in this new era, realizing 5G’s full potential requires transformation of the wireless edge. An architecture of distributed intelligence where intelligence that deals with immediacy is moved toward the edge (closer to or on the devices) while processing-intensive functions are kept in the cloud. 5G is enabled with the help of Qualcomm’s foundational inventions and mobile platforms, and is engineered to provide the high-speed low-latency link that connects them together.

One great use case of 5G and edge computing is extended reality (XR). Enough processing is kept in the headset while offloading nearly everything else, including rendering, to the cloud. With your 360-degree views effortlessly synchronized with your movements, XR experience is intended to feel immediate and photorealistic. Simply put, this could  transform your experience from passive watching to living the moment.

Another use case is AR shopping. This is just beyond utility, it can make the shopping experience more fun, with the ability to virtually decorate with friends or family. An experience that can allow you to see how a couch will fit in your home – try it before you buy type of experience.

What’s next can only be imagined

Qualcomm, an inventor of breakthrough technologies for wireless, is focused on enterprise as well as consumer use cases. The next phase of 5G is designed to bring large-scale changes for the enterprise and business sides, allowing for innovation in autonomous driving, smart cities, social good, and beyond.

Bra, wedding rings and scarf among items flushed down train toilet

Train passengers have been asked to behave responsibly after a bra was flushed down a toilet, causing a blockage.

Virgin Trains said that four toilets are being taken out of service every day as a result of people using them incorrectly.

This meant 18,000 lost toilet hours every year with a repair bill of more than £180,000.

The bra is not the only strange item to be found down the toilet on the operator's Pendolino trains – with glasses, wedding rings, nappies and a football scarf also causing plumbing problems.

More than 90% of the blockages were caused by wet wipes – and even those labelled as being flushable were clogging pipes.

Michael Jacks, head of fleet and engineering at Virgin Trains, said: "It did make us smile when we found the bra as it's not something you would expect to find.

"But it does highlight a very serious issue, and one that greatly impacts on our customers.

"Bins are provided, and we would remind everyone to follow the three Ps of flushing. Only pee, poo and paper should be flushed down any toilet."

Top 10 most common New Year's resolutions

Every year, millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, hoping to spark positive change. The recurring themes each year include a more active approach to health and fitness, improved finances, and learning new things for personal and professional development. Chances are, more than a couple of the top 10 most common resolutions will look familiar to you:

  1. Exercise more
  2. Lose weight
  3. Get organized
  4. Learn a new skill or hobby
  5. Live life to the fullest
  6. Save more money / spend less money
  7. Quit smoking
  8. Spend more time with family and friends
  9. Travel more
  10. Read more

However once the glow of a fresh new year wears off, many people struggle to make good on their plans. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 46% of people who made New Year’s resolutions were successful. That means over half of the people who set a goal for the new year will fail!

The study also involved non-resolvers, people who did not make a New Year’s resolution, but had a goal they wanted to achieve that year. Only 4% of non-resolvers were successful at achieving their goals, a far bleaker result than those who did make a New Year’s resolution.

Naturally, we don’t want to be in the camp of folks that fail to achieve their aspirations and dreams for 2019, so we’ve put together an exhaustive plan for following through on your resolution.

If you want to realize your New Year’s resolution this year, follow these 10 steps:

1. Mentally prepare for change

Changing ingrained habits is no easy task, so before diving head-first into your New Year’s resolution, it is important to take a step back and get ready for that impending change.

The first breakthrough in change is taking a personal inventory. Being that it’s the end of one year and the beginning of the next; it’s perfect timing to take stock in the past year’s accomplishments. Think about the following:

  1. What did I set out to do in the past year?
  2. Where did I make progress?
  3. Where didn’t I see progress?

Naturally, your resolution may focus on areas that lack progress, but don’t forget to savor the progress made, and find some small way to celebrate. Those happy feelings are useful! If possible, try to associate them with an object or word related to your accomplishment.

You will want to keep upbeat with your new resolution, so you can use that positive association with last year’s accomplishments to remind you of those good feelings when you are feeling challenged.

As you start thinking about the changes you want to implement, make sure to do the following:

  • Stay positive
  • Try not to make big/quick changes
  • Change should be gradual
  • Build on smaller changes
  • Allow a little room for error

2. Set a goal that motivates you

You would be surprised how often people set goals that are not for themselves. These goals could be dictated or coerced by a manager, spouse, or parental / peer pressure.

While it’s nice to have some external support, if you don’t share the same passion, the resolution has a small chance of succeeding and could even be dead on arrival.

To do this, you need to make sure the goal you set is important to you and only you and that there is value or benefit for you in achieving the goal. It is these two things that will provide the reason and willingness to take action. This is also known as motivation!

Thus, it’s a safe bet if your resolutions align with the following:

  • Your goals
  • Your priorities
  • Your dreams
  • Your aspirations

Not only should you align around your inner-most desires, but you should also make sure the resolutions align around your top priorities. This will lead to a “must do” attitude.

3. Limit resolutions to a manageable amount

A common mistake in resolution setting is having too many and spreading yourself too thin. We all want to learn 25 different languages, 15 new job skills, and eliminate 5 bad habits, but we are not superheroes. We only have so much attention span we can dedicate to self-improvement, so having too many resolutions is a great way not to achieve the many goals you have set out for yourself.

Thus, you should make a short list of resolutions that you can manage in the upcoming year. Knowing that short list of priorities is the hard part. The key here is understanding how to prioritize.

Here is an exercise that you can undertake to help you figure out what is most important in your life. All you need is a post-it pad, a pen, and a wall.

  1. Write anything you want to accomplish for self-improvement purposes on a post-it
  2. Each post-it only gets one discreet tactic
  3. Place each post-it on the wall
  4. Go crazy – use as many post-its as possible
  5. Group together similar post-its
  6. Place the topics you feel strongly about at the top of the wall
  7. Put the topics you feel “meh” about on the bottom
  8. Spend a lot of time thinking about the order of the first 3-5 post-it (groups)

As you might suspect, #8 is the most time-consuming, because it will determine what resolutions you are going to take on this year.

The final piece of the puzzle here is knowing your limitations and personal bandwidth. With that in mind, you should focus on your top priorities while balancing how much attention you can honestly devote to a resolution.

Final thought: It’s better to tackle one resolution well than multiple resolutions poorly.

4. Be specific

When it comes to setting resolutions, it’s easy to set bad goals that could lead to poor follow through. Fortunately, SMART goal setting framework can help you craft better goals.

SMART goals are:

  • Specific – Articulate the resolution as clearly as possible. For example, quitting smoking is better than being healthy. While “being healthy” is great, the wording can be interpreted in many ways.
  • Measurable – Quantify your resolution if possible, i.e. I will lose 10% of my body weight.
  • Attainable – Choose a goal within the realm of possibility, but yet challenging. Making 100 friendsthis year would be amazing, but probably pretty hard to do. On the other, making 10 new friends is doable.
  • Relevant – Keep it relevant to your priorities and goals. See motivation section above!
  • Time-sensitive – Give yourself a time-frame in which to achieve a goal. A deadline will instill some urgency and provide a time when you can celebrate your success.

5. Break up big goals into smaller goals

A lot of us tend to be over eager and grandiose when it comes to resolutions. We have the best of intentions and may accidentally take on a goal that is too big to achieve. Thus, it’s helpful to divide a big goal into smaller goals that are more achievable.

Let’s say you are the leader of an alien race, and your resolution for 2019 is capturing the planet Earth. That is a huge goal!! You can’t just tell your intergalactic fleet of spaceships “take over planet Earth” and expect success.

You have to chunk up this big crazy feat into smaller more management accomplishments:

  1. Claim New York City
  2. Sack the Tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut
  3. Dominate Eastern Seaboard
  4. Capture the United States of America
  5. Occupy North America

Similarly, you can break up your year-long resolution into weekly or monthly goals. And have tasks planned for each month.

  1. January: North America
  2. March: South America
  3. May: European
  4. July: Asia
  5. September: Africa

By breaking your tactical plan into discrete steps, you now have a pretty good chance of world domination by the end of the year.

Now chunking up a big goal is easier said than done. Here are a few tips to help you make your massive goal more achievable:

  • Create a list of sub-tasks
  • Prioritize and order them
  • Use a visual map to display
  • Assign milestones to each task
  • Decide how much time each task requires
  • Allocate resources accordingly
  • Focus on the next step, not the big goal

6. Write down your goals

While it’s great to have goals, it is critical to document them in some way. Here are six reasons to write down your goals:

  1. They are easy to forget. While that may seem silly, we are human, and it is human to be easily distracted and forgetful.
  2. Writing down your resolutions helps you clarify what it is you want to achieve. It forces you to make decisions and be precise with your words.
  3. Writing establishes intention, but action needs to be taken to achieve your resolution. Having a written account of your goals is a constant reminder to take action.
  4. Written goals can act as a filter and guiding light for what opportunities to pursue. On any given day, there are a million decisions to make. When in doubt, refer to the goals you have set to dictate the way forward.
  5. Documented goals will help you overcome resistance to progress. We set goals to move forward, but there is a natural resistance to change. Your written goals spur you forward when you hit a speed bump or obstacle.
  6. Finally, written goals are a reminder of how far you have come and what you have achieved. It’s a nice feeling to look at back at the end of next year, and know your resolution has come to fruition. It’s a reason to crack open that bottle of champagne and celebrate.

Here are a few ways you can document your resolutions for 2019:

  • Write them in a journal
  • Draft an email to yourself
  • Store in Evernote or some other note-taking tool
  • Print and tape to the wall

7. Share your resolutions with others

“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

It’s great to make a resolution for yourself and maybe even write it down, but if no one else knows about it, it’s easy to forget about or even ignore. And when you don’t achieve it, no one will notice or care.

On the flip side, your counterparts who decided to tell someone about their goal, feel something different. Now that they’ve gone public with their goal, they feel a sense of obligation and accountability. Essentially, if you don’t follow through, they are going to let everyone down.

Crazy as it sounds, this sense of guilt is often more powerful than self-motivation. The upshot here is that when you do succeed, the people you shared with will celebrate with you!

If you want to take goal sharing to the next level, you could organize a mastermind group. A mastermind group is a collection of highly motivated people who share a common goal and are looking to encourage and help each other improve.

How to do it:

  1. Find some kindred spirits with similar goals
  2. Meet regularly (weekly or monthly depending on level of commitment)
  3. Share setbacks and progress
  4. Stay motivated!

Now if you don’t have the time or inclination to do the above, another way to achieve the same result is to make a Facebook post declaring your intentions to all your friends. You can bet people will cheer you on and ask about your progress over the course of the year!

8. Automate where possible

A stitch in time saves nine.

The good news is you probably have technology in your pocket that can help you follow through on your resolution – automation in the form of reminder apps.

Nowadays there are a million different apps and services to help you follow through on your resolutions. These free tools can help provide a constant reminder:

  • Google Calendar: Set a recurring meeting tied to your resolution, i.e. scheduling workout sessions at the gym.
  • Google Now: Personal assistant that provides information as you need it.
  • Reminders (on iOS): Set up timed alerts for tasks.
  • Boomerang for Gmail: Schedule reminder emails to yourself (Freemium).

On top of these commonly used apps, there are also “to-do list” and task management apps that have the ability to schedule reminders and milestones. Here are a few popular choices:

  1. Asana
  2. Trello
  3. Todoist
  4. Microsoft To Do
  5. Omnifocus
  6. Things

Note: All of these apps listed above won’t help you do the work, but they do serve a constant reminder of the work that needs to be done.

9. Review your resolution regularly

Let’s face it, if you are not thinking about your resolution regularly, you are not going to follow through. Thus, a crucial part of realizing your goal is a regular review.

At a minimum, this review should be monthly, but the more frequent the better.

Here’s one way to build in goal review into your routine.

  1. Schedule a monthly “big picture” review during the first week of each month. This will serve as a planning meeting where you distribute smaller tasks and goals to different weeks throughout the month.
  2. Do a weekly check-in to check progress on the monthly goal.
  3. Set a daily reminder for smaller resolution tasks.

It may seem a little crazy to think about your resolution every single day, but it is those smaller incremental steps that lead to massive changes over the course of a single year.

10. If you fall off track, get back on quick

Rome was not built in a day.

We’ve established it will take time for your resolution to become a reality and we know change is difficult. In fact, we’ve already established we should leave some room for mistakes and setbacks.

Keep the following ideas in mind:

  • Skipping an intermediate task is not a complete failure
  • Missing a goal by 10% or even 80% is not a complete failure
  • Finishing a task late is not a complete failure
  • A moment of weakness is meaningless in the grand scheme of things

Setbacks can happen, but so long as they are handled correctly, they will not impact the big goal. The key is to avoid a defeatist attitude at all costs, i.e. “Well I screwed up once, why should I even try to do this anymore.

And if there is a setback, it’s important to understand what lead to that moment, and how you can avoid a similar situation in the future, i.e. "If I play video games after work, I will not go to the gym. Don’t play video games after work!"

Once a mistake is made, own it and move on to the next thing. For example, if you skipped a study session, make it up tomorrow, and keep on moving. A few small mistakes shouldn’t spoil your resolution for the year!

Anokye Supremo flies to India for surgery

Anokye Supremo, formerly known as Daddy Lumba Jnr flew out of the country  earlier this week to receive treatment abroad.

The “Krom Ay3 d3” hitmaker started battling a huge tumour on his left eye in November and appealed to the general public to help him raise funds to undergo surgery.

Later in December 2018, an interview on Kofi TV revealed the worse of his situation as he was seen with both eyes swollen, blurring his vision as a result.

The musician subsequently appealed for $12,000 to undergo surgery in India.

Thankfully, well-wishers and sympathizers came together to help raise the amount, which helped the musician fly out of the country for the surgery.

Speaking before his departure, he made known that, due to medication from the Indian hospital, the tumour had shrunk.

“Even though I couldn’t receive calls, my manager told me of the good wishes and support from Ghanaians. I must say I was very surprised at the love and very grateful to Ghanaians,” he said.

He has also promised to compose a gospel song and appreciate all those who supported him after the surgery.

Kwame Anokye, well known as Anokye Supremo was in the news earlier this year after he was sued by his mentor Daddy Lumba over image rights.

Somalia expels UN envoy Nicholas Haysom

Somalia has expelled the UN's top envoy, Nicholas Haysom, accusing him of "shaming" the world body by acting like the country's ruler.

Mr Haysom had raised concern about the killing of protesters allied with ex-militant Islamist Mukhtar Robow.

Security forces were allegedly involved in the deaths of about 15 of the protesters and the detention of about 300 people, the UN says.

Somalia's government is heavily dependent on foreign aid.

The UN provides training, uniforms and stipends to its security forces, who are battling militant Islamist group al-Shabab.

Mr Robow, a former deputy leader of al-Shabab, defected from the group in 2017.

He announced last October that he intended to run for the presidency of Somalia's South West state.

However, the government banned him from contesting the poll and the security forces arrested him in early December.

The government said he had not "relinquished his extremist ideologies".

'Sovereignty violated'

Mr Haysom wrote to the government on 30 December, questioning the legal basis for Mr Robow's arrest and the subsequent crackdown on his supporters demonstrating in Baidoa, the capital of South West state.

It is unclear whether the government replied to Mr Haysom's concerns, but Foreign Minister Ahmed Isse Awad said the UN envoy was "no longer welcome" in the country.

"Mr Haysom has violated diplomatic rules, and acted as though he is the head or the ruler of Somalia. He is a shame to the conduct of the UN and has violated the sovereignty and independence of Somalia," he told BBC Somali.

Mr Haysom is a South African and was a legal adviser to the country's first black President Nelson Mandela.

He later served as a UN envoy to Afghanistan, Sudan and South Sudan.

He was appointed as UN chief Antonio Guterres' special representative for Somalia in September 2018, and was assigned the task of helping to achieve peace in the country.

Somalia has been unstable since the fall of the Siad Barre regime in 1991.
