Put £326 million investment package from UK to good use -NPP Chairman to gov't
The Chairman for New Juaben North Constituency of NPP, Mr Boateng Agyeman has urged the NPP government to put the £326 million from the United Kingdom to good use, in order to generate much gains from it.
Background
Ghana is set to draw 326 million pounds sterling from the coffers of the British government for major infrastructural developments across the country.
One of the beneficiary projects of the investment funds is a £120 million export contract which would see the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital upgraded.
A £40 million Contracta Construction UK deal has been penciled under the investment deal for the new Kumasi Airport, as well as a £60 million funding for a new 250-bed capacity hospital in Koforidua.
Other projects include the Tema Aflao road project worth £80 million, as well as a £26 million Aqua Africa export contract for the supply of solar-powered water filtration systems in Ghana.
Speaking on the issue on Atinka TV’s Morning Agenda, a segment on Ghana Nie, Mr Boateng Agyeman identified that in many instances, Ghana is not able to utilise such monies, be it grants or loans and end up using other monies to pay it without making any profits.
“If we intend to invest it into Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, today running a hospital is a big business across the world and so whatever we are investing we should invest it properly and make sure we get proper returns. We should know that healthcare is not free, but rather very expensive, so we have to do proper investment,” he said.
Mr Boateng Agyeman added that,”Once you do proper investment, the professionalism from there will boost the work of the doctors; we know there are equipment that gives different ideas on how to grow a particular industry, and so we should not go for the money and still make the facility a normal one and then at a point we would have to go and look for another money from cocoa producers or others to pay for it.”
Still justifying the need to invest properly into the stated projects, especially the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, he stated that,”It will help build the health system, it will make it best such that people would not have to travel outside the country for medical attention. If we borrow and do it properly the stress on the economy will not be that much.”
For his part, the Former Central Regional Chairman of NDC, Mr Allottey Jacobs identified that such commitments are the ingredients that will boost the moral of the cedi.
He expressed excitement over the move, saying that,”We are lucky as a nation to have this money, because of the policy of Boris Johnson. I am sure it is because of the good image of Ghana, that is why they are giving us this amount of money. Kudos to all of us for being able to sustain our democracy, and we are improving day by day, despite all the difficulties.”
Identifying that every government has its challenges, Mr Allottey Jacobs praised the President for the move, saying that, “It is only a wise man who will swallow his pride to find a solution that he prescribed for his people.”

Impounded electrical cables on the market after being declared substandard in 2017 (video)
The Tema Police Command together with the Ghana Standards Authority, has begun investigations into how three 40 -footer containers with electrical cables, which were impounded and declared substandard by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority in 2017, have found their way onto the market.
The investigation follows allegations made against the Standards Authority by T Digital Company Limited, which imported the goods in 2017 but was denied the opportunity to clear them from the Port because they were declared substandard by the Authority.
The goods, which were in the possession of the Customs Division of the GRA for onward destruction, have found their way into a shop at Tema Community 9, three years on.
According to the brother of the importer, who is the Manager of T Digital Company, Francis Anokye, they had information that a cable dealer at community 9, had received a container full of electrical cables and was selling them for a song. They dashed to the scene and realized the cables being sold were the ones impounded in 2017 by the GRA.
Police officers from the Tema Command who were called to the scene have since Saturday been guarding the shop and searching for the owner who is currently on the run.
The police and the GSA secured a court order to break the container and has subsequently confirmed the authenticity of the report for onward action.
Meanwhile, the owner of the consignment who is yet to come to terms with the ordeal, wants the various security agencies to intervene and unravel the perpetrators of the crime.

National Chocolate Day 2020 laucnhed
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in partnership with the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), has launched this year’s National Chocolate Day.
The day, which falls on February 14, was instituted by the Ministry of Tourism in 2005 in collaboration with GTA, COCOBOD and Cocoa Processing Company and other stakeholders to create awareness of the health benefits of cocoa-based chocolate products.
This year’s event, which is on the theme: “My chocolate experience, My holistic well-being”, would also be used to promote the consumption of Ghanaian chocolate and an increase in domestic tourism.
Launch
At the launch of the event yesterday at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, said it was important for all Ghanaians to promote the consumption of made in Ghana chocolate and cocoa-based products and also position cocoa and the chocolate experience as a strong element of the Ghana tourism experience.
In a speech read on her behalf by the Chairperson of the GTA, Ms Adelaide Ahwireng, said the consumption of chocolate locally was largely successful and “the National Chocolate Day is now an important feature of the tourism calendar of events.”
Sustainable
The Deputy Executive Director of Finance and Administration of the GTA, Mr Isaac Adomako-Mensah, expressed appreciation for the support of some sponsors including Alisa Hotels and Stedna School of Baking and Confectionary.
“I wish to urge all to participate in the main celebration on 14th February and also encourage all Ghanaians to use chocolate as a symbol of love by eating a bar of chocolate and also using chocolate and other cocoa-based products as gifts for their loved ones and relations,” Mr Adomako-Mensah stated.
The Marketing Manager of the country’s largest chocolate producer CPC, Nana Agyeman Ansong, stated that cocoa from Ghana was known as the best in the world and that chocolate from the country had also become a national cultural identity.
Activities
Activities for the celebration include a cocoa art competition, which starts on Monday, February 10, this year, where artists would submit paintings depicting the “Cocoa story”, to the Accra Tourist Information Centre.
There will also be “My Chocolate Experience” at the Cocoa Clinic, North Kaneshie in Accra, on Wednesday, February 12, this year, where chocolate and other cocoa products would be shared to the patients and staff.
The 2020 National Chocolate Day will be observed at the Alisa Hotel on Friday, February 14, 2020.

Seventeen SDA Students suspended for refusing to take exams on Sabbath
Seventeen Form four students at Kabianga Boys High school, Kericho have been suspended after the Seventh-day Adventist faithfuls refused to take exams that were scheduled on Sabbath which would have led them to breaking the Sabbath commandment of rest.
The school principal Dr Joash Oloo, in a letter to the parents stated that the students were kicked out of the school for “failing to write an assessment test offered on schedule.” The schedule, he failed to mention was contravening with other students right of worship.
The students have in turn written back to the school demanding within 7 days an unconditional apology and the purging of the suspension from their student records.
Through their lawyer, Julius Mongare Matonya, the students argue that the school principal is in violation of their constitutional rights to education and right to worship unimpeded.
“The constitutional allows freedom of worship. Even the Education Act recognises the fact that each and every student must be allowed a day for worship and it must be respected,” he said.
The school principle, as reported by The Standard did not back down from his position challenging the parents to instead find a school that would accommodate their Sabbath worship.
“We notified the parents through SMS. In a situation where we are neither suspending nor expelling a student, we expect the parent to come over to the school so that we can engage,” he said. He reminded the Adventists that there are specific missionary schools for parents who feel aggrieved by the school action.
“The Seventh Day Adventist students don’t do anything on Saturdays from 8am to 6pm. Where then is the problem for them to sit for their examination between 5am and 7:30 am,” asked Dr Oloo.He added, “Why do they want to remain in the dorms sleeping whereas Muslims and Protestants didn’t sleep on Friday and Sunday respectively?”The principal said that they expect students to be rational.
The Ministry of Education is yet to comment on the matter as it seems the Principal is trying to impose his religious beliefs on Adventists students and he is gravely misinformed about the Sabbath and Sabbath commandment.
The previous Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i had warned schools to avoid scheduling classes or exams on Sabbath or Sunday to accommodate the religious beliefs of Adventists and other christians.
