Ghana receives us$190 million after meeting compact milestone

Ghana is to receive the second allocation of compact funds from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in the amount of $190 million U.S. Dollars after the Ghanaian government met all the required conditions to access the funds. Today, MCC submitted a letter acknowledging Ghana’s achievement of this milestone to the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Upon Entry-Into-Force of the Ghana Power Compact on September 6, 2016, MCC granted access to the first allocation of compact funds in the amount of $308.2 million U.S. Dollars. MCC’s investment in the Ghana Power Compact totals $498.2 U.S. Dollars.

A delegation led by Professor Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu, Board Chair of MiDA, and Christopher Lamora, Charge d’Affairs and Ag. U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, presented the Letter to the Vice President, H.E. Mahamudu Bawumia, who received it on behalf of the President.

“Today marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the Power Compact Program. With these funds, MiDA together with its implementing entities will be able to carry out the planned investment and reform activities aimed at strengthening our country’s power distribution sector”, remarked the MiDA Board Chair.

“Meeting this important milestone is a testament to the commitment of the Ghanaian government to reform its power sector in an effort to bring critical services to its people,” MCC Acting CEO Brock Bierman said. “But much work remains. With only 3 years remaining in the MCC Ghana Power Compact, we must continue to work together until the concession is complete and the path is paved to inject private-sector investment and expertise to transform the viability of the Ghanaian power sector.”

The Vice President acknowledged the notification and thanked the U.S. Government and the MCC for their partnership through the Ghana Power Compact; a manifestation of the strong cooperation that Ghana has with the US. “Today is a great day and we are entitled to celebrate our achievement” he said. “However we have a significant number of project activities to be carried out in order to meet all milestones. I therefore urge all stakeholders to continue to collaborate and maintain the alacrity they have demonstrated so far.”

He reiterated Government’s commitment to ensuring that the Compact delivers its goal to reduce poverty through economic growth, by transforming the power distribution sector.

Chinese I.T Giant, Inspur Group, to establish West Africa headquarters in Ghana

China’s leading cloud computing company, which also happens to be the no. 2 company in China’s Information Technology industry, Inspur Group Co. Ltd, has chosen Ghana as its preferred destination in West Africa for the establishment of its regional headquarters.

According to Mr. Peter Sun, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Inspur Group, the decision by the company to establish its headquarters in Ghana was borne out of the country’s peaceful and stable nature, coupled with an impressive economic outlook, which saw Ghana grow at 8.5% in 2017, up from 3.6% in 2016.

The Inspur CEO made this known on Wednesday, 5th September, 2018, when his company paid a courtesy call on the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on the sidelines of the Ghana-Shangdong Business Conference, which was held in Jinan, Shangdong Province.

Inspur, currently has a 57% share of global sales in the Artificial Intelligence server field, is the fastest growing server vendor in the world, and holds the biggest market share for the sale of servers in China.

In addition to establishing its regional headquarters in Ghana, Mr. Peter Sun, indicated further that ten (10) Ghanaian students will be selected and offered internship programmes with the company, with these ten students being trained to take up jobs in the company’s operations in Ghana and West Africa.

Again, the Inspur CEO indicated the company will invite to China, every year, thirty (30) officials from the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, to be trained in the fields of cloud computing and data technology.

Mr. Peter Sun also indicated the readiness of the company to assist Ghana in the fields of revenue mobilization and green development, “a real estate development concept that carefully considers social and environmental impacts of development.”

On his part, President Akufo-Addo noted “the matters you are interested in, i.e. green development, mobilization of tax revenues, and the establishment of your West African Headquarters in Ghana are important matters for us. It will be very good for our country to be involved with major global companies like yours, as it will expose us to the best practices in the industry.”

The President described Inspur’s choice as an excellent one, because “Ghana is a stable country, our economy is picking up very rapidly, and so it is a good base not just for Ghana but also for West Africa.”

President Akufo-Addo assured the company of the safety of their investment in Ghana, stressing that “we encourage foreign investment in our country. So, as a base for doing business in West Africa, Ghana is ideal, and it will be a win-win situation for us all.”

Public hearing of collapsed banks "could cause mayhem" – NDC MP

The Member of Parliament for Ho Central and Member of the Finance Committee in Parliament, Benjamin Komla Kpodo, says Parliament’s in-camera hearing of the banking crisis is the best, warning that a public hearing could cause chaos.

Parliament’s in-camera hearing on the banking crisis commenced on Wednesday.

The 25-member Finance Committee is expected to focus on the role the Bank of Ghana played in the collapse of the banks, and determine the extent of culpability of Central Bank officials.

The committee will invite officials of the Finance Ministry, managers of the banks, KPMG, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Boulders among others for questioning.

Pressure group, Occupy Ghana, has objected to parliament’s decision to probe the banking crises behind closed doors.

In a petition addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Mike Aaron Oquaye, Occupy Ghana stated: “We, as members of the public whose taxes funded the bailout monies, would want to be reassured that there has been no cover-up in the inquiry because of the personalities involved in the instances of malpractice identified in the reports. Any sitting in-camera will breathe life into and give teeth to rumors that there are personalities behind huge kickback payments who are also cronies of politicians and who may be shielded by an in camera proceedings.”

However, in an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Thursday, Mr. Komla Kpodo stated that the in-camera hearing of the crisis in the banking sector was in Ghana’s interest.

He noted that a public hearing could have a domino effect on some banks, causing panic in the system.

Commenting on the fate of the staff of the defaulted banks as discussed at the probe on Wednesday 5th September 2018, Benjamin Komla Kpodo mentioned that representatives from the Bank of Ghana said that although there will be job loses, it will be managed.

Seven local banks have collapsed between 2017 and 2018. These banks are UT Bank, Capital Bank, uniBank, Sovereign Bank, The Royal Bank, The Beige Bank, and The Construction Bank.

The $2bn Sinohydro Infrastructure for Bauxite barter facility: The facts

So I have been reading and hearing some analyses which are not just misleading but also very inaccurate.

Never was it part of the narrative last year after the China trip that government was seeking to enter into a $15 or $20 billion joint venture agreement only for infrastructure for bauxite. And how people  juggle between the two figures leaves much to be desired.

For the purposes of education let me state what was the narrative. The entire $15 billion facility was in categories:

1. $2 billion facility between Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and their sister partner in China called the CNBM,

2. About $6 to $8 billion facility for integrated aluminium industry focusing on bauxite mine and refinery through a joint venture agreement between GoG and any potential off-taker, and other related projects

3. $2 billion infrastructure for bauxite barter facility between GoG and any potential partner. At that time even sinohydro was not in the picture because we didn't know which company was going to be selected,

4. $1 billion facility for other projects, and lastly

5. Freeing up of the locked $2 billion CDB loan contracted under the previous government.

All these constituted the bigger $15 billion package.  We never said anywhere that the entire $15 billion was for infrastructure for bauxite barter and anyone who paid attention to details knew this. I am a bit baffled why people choose to rely on online portal news some of which are themselves defective in terms of accuracy, but not seek to get the actual facts.

Fast forward in 2018, AGI and CNBM have successfully signed their pacts and started disbursing the $2 billion. $10 million of which has been advanced to a sugar factory last month.

The parliament of Ghana has also given approval for the $2 billion infrastructure for bauxite facility and the agreement signed for works to begin.

Works on the bauxite mines and refinery have far advanced. Government has established a holding company backed by an act of parliament this year which will enter into the joint venture agreement for the bauxite mine and refinery. In the next few weeks or months request for proposals will be issued for prospective companies to bid. If we are lucky the cost of the mining and refinery may even come less than the value originally envisaged.

Just this week, as part of the President’s tour to China $400 million of the locked up $2 billion CDB loan has been signed for release for the construction of the fishing landing sites and others.

What this means is that hopefully by the end of 2018, about 95% of the whole $15 billion package announced by the erudite and hardworking Vice President after his visit to China would be realized. And this will mean a high success rate for the biggest deal the nation Ghana has gotten from any official trip by any Vice President for so long a time.

This is remarkable and must be applauded and, if not, should be scrutinised from a more informed position than just lazily seeking to criticise.

The other good thing to note is that Sinohydro is only playing a role to provide infrastructure at the discretion of the government and people of Ghana and not at their discretion.

Government is not going to pay them anything until after 3 years by which time they should have completed the projects. Sinohydro is not a company that is going to mine the bauxite and in other words sinohydro is not a mining company.

Again, what differentiates this from the extant arrangements in the gold and oil sectors is that, here, government is not going to just export raw bauxite but rather add value to it through refining. The $2 billion that will be paid at the end of the day is just a small  fraction of the total export value of refined bauxite we have as a country, which is estimated to be around $400 billion.

20 effective natural remedies for post nasal drip

If you suspect that you have post nasal drip, there’s no need to take yourself off to your doctor unless your symptoms are super severe. Likewise, you can avoid over-the-counter remedies, too.

Here are 20 natural remedies for post nasal drip that you can make at home:

Apple Cider Vinegar

According to grandma, apple cider vinegar can cure everything. While this probably isn’t quite 100% true, apple cider vinegar can cure lots of things – including post nasal drip.

All you need to do for this one is take a tbsp of apple cider vinegar and mix it with a glass of cool water. Add a pinch of honey for a bit more taste and then consume this once a day until your symptoms have gone.

This works because apple cider vinegar is anti-inflammatory and can therefore reduce the inflammation that has been building up in your nasal passage. It also contains anti microbial properties that come in handy, too.

Lavender Essential Oil

If you LOVE the smell of lavender, you’re going to love this natural remedy.

Simply, take 3 drops of lavender essential oil and add it to any carrier oil you want. We recommend either olive or coconut oil.

Then, massage it on your throat, your back and your chest.

Do this twice a day for best results. Careful, though – because this mixture smells so good, you’ll probably find that you want to do it more often!

It works because lavender is both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. As such, it’s particularly potent whenever you have a cold or the flu.

Honey

Winnie the Pooh loved honey so much that he’d walk around with a jar of it whether he had post nasal drip or not!

Honey is divine, and honey on porridge should be mandatory. Apart from that, honey is also a sweet and tasty way of eliminating post nasal drip.

All you need to do is take a tbsp of honey and add it to a cup of warm water. Then, drink it three times a day. And that’s it!

Of course, honey is a sweetener, so you don’t want to keep on taking it all the time once your post nasal drip symptoms have gone.

It works super well because of its anti-inflammatory agents. Indeed, folk have been using it for hundreds of years to treat various ailments, post nasal drip among them.

So if ever you’ve needed an excuse to consume more money, you now have one!

Coconut Oil

Perhaps our all-tim fav carrier oil here at Beauty and Tips HQ, coconut oil is amazingly versatile and can treat a number of ailments.

And if there’s one thing it doesn’t like, it’s post nasal drip.

This is good news for you! All you’ve gotta do is take a tsp of coconut oil – and consume it!

That’s right, consume a tsp (or two) of coconut oil each morning before you eat or drink anything else, and do this each day until you stop dripping.

Like most other things on this list, coconut oil is anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, and is thus guaranteed to work.

Ginger Tea

Like coconut oil, ginger tea comes in handy for so many different things, from stomach aches to post nasal drip.

All you need for this one is an inch of fresh ginger.

Then, steep it in a cup of hot water for around ten minutes.

For a bit more of a kick, you can add some honey to the proceedings.

Then, drink your tea when it’s nice and warm. Do this three times a day and you should soon start to see results.

Ginger tea always works because it’s a total superstar that contains something called gingerol. This is a neat component that has antibacterial properties.

Not just this, but ginger is anti-inflammatory too, which means that it’s ready to kick post nasal drip in the private bits!

Green Tea

If you prefer green tea, the good news is that you can drink green tea instead of ginger tea!Green tea works just as well for clearing up post nasal drip and its assorted symptoms because it’s loaded with lots of powerful antioxidants that go to work on your infection.

Green tea also contains anti-inflammatory agents, and this helps it to soothe your poor inflamed nasal passage.

All you need to do is take a tsp of green tea and add it to a cup of hot water. Let it cool for 10 or 15 minutes before drinking.

If green tea isn’t really your thing, you could flavour it by adding a dab of honey.

Whatever you do, drink a few cups a day for the best results.

And if you’re not even keen on the idea of green tea with honey, you can buy flavoured green tea. It’s just as effective as regular green tea, but some people think it tastes better.

Garlic

Dieticians, nutritionists and health experts all agree that you should be aiming to consume garlic every single day, irregardless of whether you have post nasal drip or not.

Garlic is amazing and contains something called allicin that itself contains antimicrobial agents.

Garlic is used all around the world to combat many ailments, and it’s especially effective when treating the common cold.

For this remedy, take 3 garlic cloves, crush them and extract the juice.

If you want more taste, add some honey to the juice and consume three times a day for best results.

Salt Water Gargle

When you have nothing else in the house, you can always rely on good old salt water gargle to clear up a nasty throat infection.

Because salt water gargle attacks the infection behind your post nasal drip, it can improve your symptoms so that you soon start to feel better.

For this one, all you need to do is take a tsp of salt and add it to a glass of warm water.

Then, once you think it’s nicely cooled, gargle it around your mouth for a few moments (but don’t swallow!).

Then, just spit and rinse.

If you do these a few times a day, you should start to see some noticeable results pretty darn soon.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract is known to work wonders when it comes to post nasal drip. It contains antimicrobial agents, and it works at soothing inflammation,

It’s used to combat a number of infections, including post nasal drip.

For this one, take 200mg of grapefruit seed extract and consume it twice a day for best results.

Watch out, though – it has one heck of a sour taste!

Lemon Juice

Arguably as sour as grapefruit seed extract is Miss Reliable herself – lemon juice!

Lemon juice is well known for its health benefits, and it’s advised that anyone drinks it in the morning to flush toxins from their system.

Lemon juice can also combat post nasal drip because it’s a fab source of vitamin C, which hastens up the speeding process.

All you need to do is take a tbsp of lemon juice and add it to a glass of water 3 times a day.

Pineapple Juice

Not a massive fan of lemon juice? Try pineapple juice instead.

Just take a cup of cut pineapples, blend them with a cup of water and drink at least once each day.

Turmeric

Rather like apple cider vinegar and ginger tea, turmeric is known to cure a great deal many things. This is because it’s a natural decongestant that contains anti inflammatory and antibacterial agents. It’s often used in the fight against the common cold, which itself is one of the prime causes of post nasal drip.

For this remedy, grab yourself a tsp of turmeric and mix it into a glass of hot or warm milk.

When the milk has cooled down, drink it up!

Do this at least once a day if you want to see results.

However, this one is a bit of a hit and miss remedy because turmeric itself is a bit of an acquired taste.

And turmeric milk? Not everyone is going to go for that!

Peppermint Essential Oil

If you’re a big fan of essential oils – and especially if you’re a big fan of peppermint essential oil in particular – you’re going to love this one.

Peppermint essential oil works because it’s a natural expectorate that comes with both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This ensures it’s able to treat post nasal drip quickly and effectively.

All you need to do is take around 5 drops of peppermint essential oil and and them to a bowl of hot water.

Then, carefully inhale the steam.

Don’t put your face too close to the bowl – the last thing you want to do is burn your face!

Do this at least once a day and you should soon start seeing results.

If you prefer the smell of lavender, as we mentioned above you can use lavender essential oil as an alternative.

Vicks Vapour Rub

Remember when you were a kid and your mom used to rub this on your chest to cure your cold?

We’ve got news for you – Vicks vapour rub isn’t just for kids! It’s just as effective for adults, and it comes in real handy if you’ve got post nasal drip.

All you need to do is pop to your local chemist and buy a tub. Then, rub a hefty amount of it onto your back, your throat and your chest. Don’t be mean with the amount you use – use a generous amount for the fastest results.

In fact, Vicks works so fast that you should see instant relief.

It works so well because it contains an ingredient called menthol. It also contains eucalyptus which, like menthol, is known for its antibacterial and expectorant agents.

If you have post nasal drip, check your medicine cabinet to see if you already have some Vicks in!

Oil Pulling

Ever heard of oil pulling?

This is a known detoxifying treatment that helps to clear post nasal drip right up by clearing the congestion in your throat.

Oil pulling also contains anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents that allow it treat your drip super fast so that you feel better in no time at all.

All you need to do is take a tsp of sesame oil and mix it with 3% of hydrogen peroxide (no more than that).

Then, swish the mixture around your mouth for around 10 minutes. That’s quite a long time but you can do it!

Also, make sure that you only do it on an empty stomach.

After the 10 minutes are up, spit the mixture out into the sink and then rinse your mouth with water.

Do this each day for best results.

India court legalises gay sex in landmark ruling

In a historic verdict, India's Supreme Court ruled that gay sex is no longer a criminal offence in the country.

The ruling overturns a 2013 judgement that upheld a colonial-era law, known as section 377, under which gay sex is categorised as an "unnatural offence".

It is one of the world's oldest laws criminalising gay sex, and India has been reluctant to overturn it.

Campaigners outside the court cheered and some broke into tears as the ruling was handed down.

"Criminalising carnal intercourse is irrational, arbitrary and manifestly unconstitutional," Chief Justice Dipak Misra said while reading out his judgement.

The law was first struck down by the Delhi high court in 2009, but it was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 2013, after several political, social and religious groups petitioned for its restoration.

Even though public opinion in India's biggest cities has been in favour of scrapping the law, there remains strong opposition among religious groups and in conservative rural communities.

But this ruling from the top court is the final say in the matter as it cannot be challenged any further, and so represents a huge victory for India's LGBT community.

It is a 157-year-old colonial-era law which criminalises certain sexual acts as "unnatural offences" that are punishable by a 10-year jail term.

The law punishes, in its own words, "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal".

While the statute criminalises all anal and oral sex, it has largely affected same-sex relationships.

India's gay and transgender communities have fought long and hard to strike down the law.

Human rights groups have said police have used the statute to harass and abuse members of the LGBT community.

Equal rights activists have also argued that the very existence of such a law was proof of discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Even though it was rarely invoked when it involved consenting adults, Section 377 could be – and was sometimes – used as a tool for harassment. It is not surprising then that campaigners are describing the verdict as a "new dawn for personal liberty".

But in a largely conservative India, where leaders of all religions have consistently opposed gay sex, it will still be a while before attitudes change and the community finds full acceptance.

But laws almost always play an important role in changing mindsets, and by recognising the community's right to love, the Supreme Court has restored the dignity denied to them for a very very long time.
