Prez Mahama Petitioned  to Dissolve CJ Probe Over Alleged Dinner Meeting with Lawyer

A Ghanaian citizen, Alfred Ababio Kumi, has submitted a formal petition to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the immediate dissolution of the five-member committee investigating Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
The petition, dated 19 May 2025, follows allegations of an improper meeting between members of the committee and a lawyer representing one of the petitioners against the Chief Justice.

According to the petition, Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang (Chairman of the committee), Samuel Adibu-Asiedu (a member of the committee), and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi were seen dining with Mr. Thaddeus Sory, counsel for one of the petitioners, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra on the evening of 15 May 2025—just hours after the committee’s first sitting.

Mr. Kumi contends that the gathering, which reportedly occurred between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the Villagio-based restaurant in the Airport Residential Area, undermines the integrity of the ongoing investigation and raises serious concerns about impartiality.

Mr. Kumi argues that the presence of Justices Pwamang and Asiedu—both panel members—with Mr. Sory, who represents petitioner Daniel Ofori, creates an appearance of bias. He noted that Justice Pwamang had previously ruled in favor of Mr. Ofori in unrelated Supreme Court cases.

He further emphasized that the solemn nature of impeachment proceedings against the Chief Justice demands the highest level of transparency and neutrality, which he believes the committee no longer possesses.

Background to the Case

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was suspended from office on 22 April 2025, following the establishment of a prima facie case against her by the President, in consultation with the Council of State. Her suspension was announced in a statement by Minister for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The suspension was triggered by three separate petitions submitted earlier in the year:

  1. Shining Stars of Ghana, represented by convenor Kingsley Agyei, filed the first petition on 14 February 2025.
  2. Daniel Ofori, the second petitioner, submitted his complaint on 17 March 2025, alleging 21 counts of misconduct and four counts of incompetence relating to the Chief Justice’s administrative duties.
  3. ACP Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo (Esq), a senior police officer, filed the third petition on the same day as the first—14 February 2025.

In accordance with Article 146(10) of the 1992 Constitution, a committee was constituted to investigate the claims, following the determination of a prima facie case by the President.

As of now, the Presidency has not responded publicly to Mr. Kumi’s petition.

GPRTU to reduce transport fares by 15% effective May 25

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025.

This decision follows a meeting between the Union’s National Executive and the Minister of Transport.

The Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed the development in an interview with 3news.

“We just had a meeting with the Minister of Transport and we have agreed that effective Saturday, May 25, transport fares must be reduced by 15%,” he disclosed.

According to him, the fare adjustment is a direct response to an 18% drop in fuel prices.

He explained that although the Union typically applies a third of the fuel price decrease, they have opted for a 15% cut this time to ease the burden on passengers.

“We normally use one-third of the fuel price reduction to adjust fares, but we opted for 15% this time to reflect the fuel price trend. We also expect our counterparts in the spare parts industry to follow suit and reduce their prices,” he noted.

Ghana’s Spare Parts Association Demands That Oil Filters Be Made Locally.

Mr. Henry Okyere

The chairman of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, Mr. Henry Okyere, has revealed that the group is seeking to attract investors to support Ghanaian oil filter manufacturing.

Speaking at the annual West African Automotive Show (WAAS) in Lagos and in a subsequent interview with the Ghana News Agency, he outlined steps being taken to encourage investors to produce oil filters locally.

The event brings together key players in Nigeria’s automotive sector.

Mr. Okyere emphasized the increasing need to establish a local manufacturing base for spare parts.

“Our aim is to change the narrative. We want to ensure that in our time, Ghana produces oil filters locally, shifting from import dependency to self-reliance,” he stated.

According to Mr. Okyere, the association has already begun reaching out to potential investors who might be interested in establishing production facilities in Ghana.

He believes that in addition to reducing imports, this initiative would stabilize the Ghanaian cedi and create employment opportunities.

Additionally, the chairman highlighted the success of connecting local shaft and crank sellers to markets at lower prices, a move he said was contributing to the industry’s increased accessibility and competitiveness.

He urged the government to support the spare parts industry through funding, infrastructure development, and targeted policies.

Mr. Okyere also disclosed that discussions were underway to bring the West African Automotive Show to Ghana within the next two years.

“Hosting WAAS in Ghana will give Ghanaians an opportunity to benefit not just as consumers but also as traders and industrial players,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abaase Kwabena, Chairman of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce (Kumasi Branch), cited Kantanka Automobile as an example and expressed concern about the lack of government support for local automakers.

He called on the government to pay closer attention to these domestic businesses and assist them in increasing their production capacity to create jobs and foster wealth creation.

Joe Biden diagnosed with ‘aggressive form’ of prostate cancer

Former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer, according to a statement from his personal office Sunday, and it has spread to his bones.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement said.

It continued, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”

Biden, 82, and his family “are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” the statement said.

Biden is at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, this weekend according to a source familiar. CNN has inquired about where the former president is being treated.

The news comes days after a spokesperson for Biden said the former president was recently evaluated for a “small nodule” discovered on his prostate.

Concerns about age and health dogged Biden, the nation’s oldest sitting president, throughout his time in office and came into sharper focus following his halting debate performance against Donald Trump last June.

In February 2024, Biden underwent a physical at Walter Reed National Military Center overseen by his physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who at the time said there were “no new concerns” with the president’s health and he was “fit for duty.”

Biden has maintain a relatively low profile since leaving the White House but has slowly started to reemerge on the public stage.

He appeared earlier this month on ABC’s “The View,” where he pushed back on suggestions he experienced cognitive decline in his final year in office.

“They are wrong,” Biden said. “There is nothing to sustain that.”

Two New Mpox Cases Confirmed in Ghana: Total Rises to Four

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two additional cases of Mpox, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to four.

The new cases, recorded in the Greater Accra and Western Regions, were announced in a joint statement by the GHS and the Ministry of Health on Sunday.

According to the update, the National Public Health and Reference Laboratory verified the cases, which, significantly, show no known epidemiological link to the two earlier infections reported last week.

This suggests the possibility of community transmission, prompting swift response measures from regional health authorities.

The affected regional directorates have activated contact tracing protocols and other public health measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus. Officials emphasized that investigations are ongoing to understand the sources of these new infections.

Mpox, a viral disease transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials, presents symptoms including fever, rash, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue.

In light of the new developments, the GHS has issued a public advisory urging Ghanaians to:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

* Avoid close physical contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms, particularly skin rashes.

* Report any suspected symptoms to the nearest health facility promptly.

The Ministry and GHS have called on media houses to support nationwide education efforts by disseminating accurate information about the disease and promoting preventive practices.

“The Government of Ghana remains committed to safeguarding public health,” the statement noted, assuring the public that the health sector is leveraging its past experience in managing outbreaks to contain Mpox effectively.

The health authorities have reaffirmed their readiness to act swiftly and decisively to protect the wellbeing of all residents.
