The Dodowa Divisional Police has apprehended 40 people including 3 females for vandalizing the Doryumu Police Station.

According to some residents, the youth  took the action  because the police did not respond to their call swiftly during an attack on some toll collectors at the P.W Quarries at Shai Hills in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.

Some unknown gunmen on Saturday night   attacked the toll collectors, demanding money and in the process, killed one of the collectors, James Assuma, 40. The case was subsequently reported to the Doryumu police. However, some youth of the Doryumu township in the early hours of Sunday, besieged the police station and smashed their doors, vandalized the station and pushed one of the station pick up vehicles to the outskirt of the town in an attempt to burn it.

The Dodowa police augmented by their Prampram and Ashaiman counterparts numbering 58 embarked on an operation, leading to the arrest of the 40 suspects.

Narrating the incident to Atinka News, the Assemblyman for Doryumu, Benjamin Manye said he had a call from a colleague Assemblyman on Sunday night concerning the incident and rushed to the police station only to find several young people behind bars .

Much as he condemned the behaviour of the youth since the police are there to protect them, he was quick to add that, his checks indicated that majority of those arrested were innocent. Mr. Manye was, however concerned about the increasing spate of indiscipline in the area and called on the elders, opinion leaders in collaboration with the police to nip the unfortunate development in the bud before it festers into something else.

The Asafoatse of Doryumu, Adjangor Akwada lV,  condemned the action of the youth  and  accused some individuals of  securing the services of land guards to terrorize  people embarking on legitimate operations in the area .

Asafoatse Akwada observed that  prior to the Sunday’s incident, six people who  are currently receiving treatment at the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital were inflicted with multiple wounds by these same land guards.

He therefore called for cooperation between the town folks and the police to address the growing  Indiscipline in  the area.

Meanwhile, the suspects have subsequently been transferred to the Tema Regional Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution
