Police grabs robbers, alleged murderers

The Regional Police Headquarters has made some arrests with regards to cases that were reported to them at different places and time across the country.

In a statement, the police said it has arrested the armed robbers who shot and robbed a mobile money merchant identified as Sampson Owusu Adjei, aged 32 years of an unspecified amount of money at Onwe near Ejisu.

The police has also arrested a suspect, Alex Owusu, a 37-year-old notorious member of a car stealing syndicate.

“So far nine (9) stolen taxi cabs of different make have been retrieved from the suspect in the course of Police investigation,” the police stated.

It also made it known that the Obuasi Divisional Police Command on Monday 24th August, 2020 arrested two (2) suspected members of a car snatching syndicate on the Kumasi- New Edubiase highways after they had succeeded in snatching a taxi cab from its driver.

Aside the above, the police also stated that,”Two suspects namely Hamidu Mumuni 29years and Issah Bawa Osman 35years have been arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command for their involvement in the robbery and murder of victim Emmanuel Tabiri 23years, now deceased at Mfensi near Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region.”

I welcome you to the M.A. Alhassan Conference hall this morning to update you on crime situation in the Ashanti Region.

Ladies and Gentlemen the Command in recent past have recorded some violent crimes in the metropolis; however in all such cases the Police have made a lot of strides.

I am here this morning to share with you some of the cases recorded and action taken on them so far.

1. ROBBERY AND MURDER AT ONWE EJISU

On the 26th August, 2020 the Ejisu Divisional Police Command received a call that some three unidentified armed men with AK47 rifles and locally made pistols had shot and robbed a mobile money merchant identified as Sampson Owusu Adjei aged 32years of an unspecified amount of money at Onwe near Ejisu who was later pronounced dead on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The Police patrol was immediately dispatched to the scene but the robbers had fled into a nearby bush before the team arrived. A search was conducted at the scene and some spent shells of AK47 rifle ammunition believed to have been fired by the suspects were retrieved. 

All patrol teams and check point were notified to look out for suspected robbers. At about midnight same day the Police at Kodie acting upon intelligence arrested Suspect Martin Adjei age 40years  at Preman driving a Daewoo Matrix Taxi cab with registration number AS880-16 heading towards Offinso. 

A search on the car revealed one (1) AK47 rifle, two (2) magazines containing twenty six (26) rounds of AK47 rifle ammunition concealed in the front passenger’s seat card, a brown bag containing one (1) locally manufactured pistol, a butcher’s knife, three (3) mobile phones, cash amount of One Thousand and Fifty Ghana cedis (Ghc 1,050.00) and other items were found in the car boot. In his caution statement he admitted the offence with his two other accomplices. He has since been placed in custody. Effort is also underway to arrest his accomplices who are currently on the run.

2. Ref; ARREST OF A CAR STEALING SYNDICATE MEMBER IN KUMASI

Ref. Arrest of suspect Alex Owusu, 37years a notorious member of a car stealing syndicate by the Suntreso District Police Command on Tuesday 11th August 2020.

So far nine (9) stolen taxi cabs of different make have been retrieved from the suspect in the course of Police investigation. 

The modus operandi of the suspect is that he hires the services of taxi drivers from neighbouring towns such as Obuasi, Bekwai, Nkawkaw etc.to Kumasi under the pretense of coming to buy excavator parts at Suame magazine or visit his sick mother.

The suspect on arrival in Kumasi will convince the taxi driver to have the cab washed the washing bay and then persuade them to leave the car with the bay attendant. He then asks the driver to accompany him to Suame magazine to buy the supposed excavator parts.

The suspect later takes leave of the victim with the excuse that he is going to withdraw money from the bank, only for him to return to the washing bay and take the ignition key from the attendants and drive the car away. With the assistance of the Kasoa District Police Command, we have been able to apprehend him and through investigations he has led Police to retrieve nine (9) of such vehicles. The cars have since been retrieved from its unsuspecting buyers at Nsawam, Adeiso and Kade in the eastern Region and Kasoa and Akoti in the Central Region of Ghana. The retrieved taxi cabs includes the following:

  • Two (2) Toyota Corolla LE Taxi cab
  • Two (2) Hyundai Atos  Prime Taxi cab Ø Two (2) Daewoo Matiz Super Taxi cab
  • Two (2) Toyota Vits Taxi cab
  • Two (2) Chevrolet Matiz Taxi cab
  • A Hyundai Getz Taxi cab
  • A Toyota vibs Taxi cab

On the 17th August, 2020, suspect Alex Owusu was arraigned before a Magistrate Court at Twedea and was remanded in lawful custody to assist with investigation.

All the retrieved taxi cabs have been identified by the rightful owners who presented documents to prove ownership.

However, Police have sought the assistance of DVLA to authenticate the genuineness of the documents presented, before the vehicle would be released to the rightful owners. Suspect would be arraigned before Circuit court in Kumasi for proper trial when investigations were completed.

3. A CASE OF CAR SNATCHING

The Obuasi Divisional Police Command on Monday 24th August, 2020 arrested two (2) suspected members of a car snatching syndicate on the Kumasi- New Edubiase highways after they had succeeded in snatching a taxi cab from its driver.

The suspects, Marcus Adjei aka ‘Yaw Adjei’, 33, and Akwesi Gyamfi aka ‘Prince Gyanfi’ aka Prince ‘Acquah’ alias ‘Excoba’, 36, at about 8:00pm on the said date, hired the services of a taxi driver in charge of a Yellow and Wine Toyota Corolla Taxi Cab with registration number WR 144-17. On reaching new Atetem at the outskirt of Adansi Asokwa-bodwesamgo road, they attacked the driver at knife point and sprayed powdered pepper into his eyes and snatched the taxi cab from him and bolted with it.

Luck however, eluded them when the vehicle was intercepted by Police Officers on duty at a Police check point at Adansi Kokotintin around 11:45pm on same day. 

The two have since been remanded into custody, assisting Police with investigations. Whiles the taxi cab is impounded at the Obuasi Divisional Police headquarters for further investigation. 

4. ROBBERY AND MURDER AT MFENSI

Two suspects namely Hamidu Mumuni 29years and Issah Bawa Osman 35years have been arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command for their involvement in the robbery and murder of victim    Emmanuel Tabiri 23years, now deceased at Mfensi near Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region.

 Preliminary investigation has revealed that the two (2) suspects, on Thursday 30th July 2020 connived attacked and robbed the victim who was a caretaker at a poultry farm at the aforementioned community.  Police investigation subsequently led to the arrest of suspect Hamidu Mumuni on Thursday 20th August, 2020.

A search in his room revealed one (1) single barrel gun, one (1) locally manufactured pistol and one (1) shot gun together with thirteen (13) live cartridges and one (1) empty cartridge. Suspect Mumuni later led the police to arrest Issah Bawa Osman at his resident.

The weapons will be sent to the Police Crime Lab for examination and report, with the duplicate docket will be forwarded to the Attorney

General’s Department for study and advice.

5. BANTAMA ROBBERY AND MURDER ON 30TH

JUNE, 2020

The Ashanti Regional Police Command have arrested suspect Kwame

Precious Mintah alias “ SoSo”, for his involvement in the robbery and murder of Mark Amofa of the Bantama branch of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the Ashanti Region.

Suspect Mintah was arrested on Saturday 8th August, 2020 at his hideout at Ash town suburb of Kumasi. 

It would be recalled that on Tuesday 30th June 2020 one Mark Amofa now deceased, who was a warden of the aforementioned church went to the Bantama branch of Ecobank to withdraw money and was attacked and by four (4) armed men on two (2) separate motorbikes. The armed robbers succeeded in robbing him of an amount worth four thousand seven hundred and thirty Ghana Cedis (Ghc 4,730.00) and later shot him.

The suspects after perpetrating the heinous crime went into hiding, up until Kwame Precious was arrested on 8th August, 2020 upon intelligence. He is currently is custody assisting Police with investigation, whiles effort is underway to get his accomplices apprehended. 

A police investigation has also revealed that suspect Kwame Precious was discharged from prisons after serving a remand sentence at the Kumasi Central Prisons.

6. STREET ROBBERY AT MOSHIE ZONGO

The Tafo Pankrono District Police Command on Monday 31st August 2020 at about 12:45pm arrested Joseph Adongo 25years for robbery at the Moshe Zongo, a suburb of Kumasi. 

The suspect and his accomplice Micheal Azinaba who now at large, wielding a foreign made pistol, attacked their victim around the Moshie Zongo Methodist church and robbed him of his personal effects.

The victim subsequently raised an alarm, attracting residents around who pursued the suspects and got Adongo arrested. Whiles his accomplice Micheal Azinaba managed to escape with the booty. Suspect Joseph Adongo who was nearly lynched by the mob, was recused by the Police after a good samaritan intervened and informed the Police.

He was later recused by the Police and sent to the Tafo Pankrono District Police Headquarters for further interrogation. He is also in custody and will be arraigned before court, whiles efforts are underway to get his accomplice arrested.

7. ATTEMTED STREET ROBBERY

The Airport District Police command on Tuesday 25th August 2020 at about 11:45pm arrested suspect John Akwesi and Joshua Afriyie both 18years for attempted robbery. 

The two (2) suspects, wielding machete and a pair of scissors attempted to rob a National Security Operative at Decheamso, but were overpowered and disarmed by the National Security Operative. The two were subsequently handed over to the Airport District Police Command for further investigation.

They are in custody assisting investigation, whiles the exhibit to-wit Machete and a pair of Scissors are retained for evidential purpose.
