Police issue caution following spike in ‘fake’ kidnap cases

Director of Public Affairs for the  Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alexander Obeng, has issued a caution to the general public over the rate of fake kidnap cases in the country.

This caution follows the latest fake kidnap over the weekend where three suspects, Joana Krah, 29, Susana Awortwe, 27 and Francis Eshun 27 were arrested for trying to extort money by means of kidnapping.

Francis Eshun and Susana helped Joana fake her kidnapping in order to extort GHS5,000 from her stepfather.

However, after realising that the stepfather had involved the police and there were frantic efforts underway, Joana reported herself and confessed that the kidnap was feigned.

Joana was then arrested.

Speaking to the issue on Atinka TV’s Morning show ‘Ghana Nie’ with host Ekourba Gyasi, Director of Public Affairs for Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alexander Obeng, expressed worry over the spate of fake kidnap cases in the country.

According to him, this attitude have the tendency of throwing the country into a heightened state of fear and panic.

“ I will caution the general public to be careful in pulling kidnap pranks. The Police will not hesitate to deal with persons who would want to throw the country into any state of unwarranted fear,” Superintendent Alexander Obeng told Ekourba Gyasi.

She resurfaced a week later at Axim in the Western Region without her alleged pregnancy claiming her baby had been abducted by her kidnappers.

Police conducted two separate medical tests on Josephine at different hospitals, with revealed that she was never pregnant.
