Power corrupts good intentions; be wary of it – Kufour warns NPP

Former President John Agyekum Kufour has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) fraternity – the leadership of the party and government, aspirants and delegates to be wary of power in the discharge of their duties as it has its way of tricking people with good intensions.

Alluding to the famous political maxim, “power they say corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, he said at every time when members of the party make progress under the government as it is happening they ought to act diligently.

The former President made the remarks at the party’s 26th National Delegates Conference ongoing at the Koforidua Technical University.

Admonishing the over 6,000 delegates and party stalwarts, he noted that power if not handled well could affect ideologies and interventions and “thinking big”.

“Power can trick you, if you are not careful you become complacent, if you are not careful you become conceited, if you are not careful you become discriminatory; if you are not careful, you think you do not need to look critically at the grassroots.”

He added that, as old uncle and elder, his duty at the grounds is to remind their leadership to be mindful of power as they are just one and half years into power.

According to the former president, per their work in government they (NPP) would retain power come 2020. He was, however, quick to add that retaining power in 2020 would largely rely on the massive unity from all quarters.

Mr.  Kufour also cautioned possible winners to swallow their egos while those who may lose to be magnanimous in defeat.
