In a decisive move aimed at reducing government expenditure, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances and fuel allocations to all political appointees.
The directive, issued Tuesday from the Presidency, is the latest in a series of austerity measures intended to streamline public spending and redirect funds toward critical national priorities.
“This is a time for leadership by example,” the President said through his spokesperson, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who is also Minister for Government Communications.
“If we are asking citizens to make sacrifices for the good of the country, it is only fair that those in leadership do the same.”
President Mahama’s cost-cutting strategy has included reducing the size of government, with fewer ministerial and presidential office appointments.
Other measures have involved discontinuing satellite TV subscriptions at the Presidency and other government facilities—moves described by the administration as symbolic but necessary steps to instill fiscal discipline.
The cancellation of fuel benefits is expected to significantly reduce recurring operational costs, which have long been criticized as excessive.
While the announcement is likely to generate debate, many observers see it as a strong signal of the President’s intent to prioritize essential services over bureaucratic privilege.
As the government faces growing pressure to manage limited resources more efficiently, this action is expected to set the tone for further reforms in public sector spending.
