PURC resolves 96% of complaints against ECG, GWC in Volta and Oti regions

The Volta and Oti  Regional Office of the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) resolved about 96% of complaints made against the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Ghana Water Company Limited

The above information is contained  in the 2024 Mid year report of the Volta and Oti Regional PURC.

” The Volta Regional Office received a total of six hundred and ninety-nine (699) complaints filed against the ECG and GWL during the period under review. Six hundred and seventy-one (671) complaints making 96.00% were resolved during the period. Six hundred and fifty-two (652) complaints representing 93.28% of the total complaints received were against the ECG whereas forty-seven (47) complaints representing 6.72% were reported against the GWL,” the report said.

According to the report, the unresolved complaints which form 4.00% are at various stages of resolution adding that  “ECG resolved six hundred and twenty-seven (627) complaints making 96.17% out of the six hundred and fifty-two (652) complaints lodged against it. Of the forty-seven (47) complaints filed against it, the GWL responded to forty-four (44) of them constituting 93.62%.”

Complaints lodged with the Commission indicate that 90.84% of the complaints received were about Quality-of-Service Supply. Next is Billing with 6.15% mainly due to overbilling and bulk billing, followed by Metering with 1.00% as a result of faulty meters. In fourth place are Payments and Consumer Service Delivery (CSD) at 0.72% each, Unlawful Disconnection at 0.42%, and Others at 0.14%. 

Community Education

The Commission rolled out public education in forty-three (43) communities, facilitated by assembly members and opinion leaders in the communities engaged. Participants were brought to light about the Commission and its works in the Volta/Oti Region and they were also taught the complaints policy and procedures. Some of the communities visited were: Likpe Agbozome, Bame, Lolito, Bala, Adaklu, Teteman, Amedormekope, Dzebetato, Agbledome, Dzita, Keta, Abor, Afiadenyigba, Vume and others.
