Defense counsel for Kwabena Adu Boahene and others, Samuel Atta Akyea, has expressed confidence ahead of the anticipated appearance of the lead investigator in the ongoing case of Republic v. Kwabena Adu Boahene & Ors, describing the forthcoming cross-examination as potentially decisive.
Speaking to journalists after proceedings, Lawyer Atta Akyea suggested that the defense is unshaken by developments so far and is looking forward to what he believes will be a pivotal courtroom moment.
“Cromwell’s day will be the best day,” he remarked, referring to the expected testimony of the investigator. “There is nothing like seeing that he knows everything about that,” he added, implying that the defense is prepared to rigorously test the prosecution’s evidence.
His comments come on the back of testimony from the prosecution’s second witness, Ruby Edith Adumuah, who serves as Head of Finance at the National Security Bureau (NSB). In her evidence before the court, Ms. Adumuah stated that she had no knowledge of any alleged theft or missing funds amounting to GH¢49.1 million.
“As head of finance within the National Security space, I am not aware of the theft or any missing GH¢49.1 million,” she told the court. She further indicated that she had not reported any such incident to authorities, including the Attorney-General, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Auditor-General, or the Police.
“It would have been my job to flag any such theft,” she emphasized.
The testimony has been viewed by observers as a significant moment in the trial, potentially raising questions about the prosecution’s claims regarding financial impropriety within the National Security framework.
Mr. Atta Akyea, however, maintained that the defense would reserve its full response for the appropriate time, hinting that more clarity would emerge when the investigator takes the stand.
The case has attracted considerable public attention, given its implications for accountability and oversight within Ghana’s national security apparatus. Proceedings are expected to continue with heightened scrutiny as the prosecution prepares to call additional witnesses.
