The Director General of the National Road Safety Authority, Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, has issued a strong warning to drivers to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations as Ghanaians travel to their hometowns and polling stations for the upcoming elections.
He emphasized the anticipated increase in passenger traffic at lorry stations and terminals as people travel to vote, warning that some drivers may attempt to exploit the situation by overloading vehicles and speeding to maximize profits.
“In the quest to travel, drivers may prioritize profit over safety. This is where we must take absolute control to prevent crashes and protect lives,” he said.
The DG identified specific stretches of roads as critical areas of concern due to their high rate of accidents. These include the stretch from Accra to Kumasi, continuing through Konongo to Kintampo and Tamale. He noted that these routes require increased monitoring and strict enforcement of traffic laws.
“The stretch from Accra through Kumasi to Tamale is critical. Many crashes have been recorded along this route, often due to disregard for road safety regulations,” he noted.
He also highlighted the Accra-Kasoa-Winneba stretch as a focus area but expressed some relief that ongoing road construction has minimized risks in certain portions. However, he described the Kasoa-Winneba road as “terrible,” citing the lack of adherence to road rules by drivers as a major concern.
Ing. Adonteng called on travelers, transport operators, and authorities to collaborate in ensuring a safe and incident-free election period. He stressed that prioritizing safety is crucial to avoid preventable accidents and fatalities.
The National Road Safety Authority has pledged to intensify public education and law enforcement to ensure all road users arrive safely at their destinations during this critical time.
