A Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso Constituency and Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) for Asokore Mampong, Mr. Kennedy Kamkam has clarified that the government will share the 1.75% levy on electronic transactions, especially momo between the Telcos and subscribers.

According to him, the subscribers do not have the bear the whole cost of the 1.75% levy on any momo they send, adding that the Telcos will also bare part of the cost.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, reading the 2022 budget in Parliament on Wednesday 17th November 2021, said government has decided to place a levy on all electronic transactions.

According to him, Electronic transactions covering mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances will be charged at an applicable rate of 1.75%, which shall be borne by the sender except inward remittances, which will be borne by the recipient.

Speaking with the Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie, Mr Kennedy Kamkam said the government realised that most of the Telcos make a lot of profits but send the money to their countries of origin and in the end, pay little to the country.

Due to this, he said government was going to engage the Telcos to pay a certain percentage of money to the country, so that the subscribers can also pay part in order to make up for the 1.75% E-Levy.

“We realised that the Telcos make a lot of money from these transactions and in the end they send it to their countries and they give us very little. So we are saying that they should pay a certain percentage so that the users will also pay some from their E- transactions so that we will all not pay road toll again. We will not burden Ghanaians with all the 1.75, we will take some from the Telcos and then Ghanaians will also pay some,” he said.

He confirmed that those who send momo of GH100 and below will not be affected by the 1.75% levy.

Meanwhile, the Minority in parliament stated that it will reject the budget if the 1.75 is not amended.
