Surrogacy: Adwoa Safo calls for proper regulation

The Minister Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has called for proper regulation of surrogacy.

Surrogacy is an arrangement, often supported by a legal agreement, whereby a woman (the surrogate mother) agrees to bear a child for another person or persons, who will become the child’s parent(s) after birth.

Intended parents use surrogacy to start or grow their families when they can’t do so on their own.

Speaking to the Appointments Committee of Parliament,  The Minister Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo said, surrogacy, as a system, is a new area that needs to be looked at and properly regulated.

She explained that in the advanced world, Surrogacy is well regulated to the extent that every step of the procedure is legal and has to go through the proper processes.

According to her, unlike the western world, surrogacy is not regulated in Ghana and thus a big challenge for people who want to patronize the system.

The Minister Designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo sated that surrogacy shouldn’t be cast out of the Ghanaian society since it is a novel and more scientific way for women to be mothers.

“ I believe that surrogacy is a new area that we need to looked at as a country and properly regulate it as such because in order Western and advanced world, it is well regulated to the extent that every step of the procedure is legal and has to go through the proper processes. When we come here, we don’t have that so it will be an area I will look at. I don’t think it should be cast out completely from the society”, she added.
