The Eastern Regional branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana) has warned all its members to strictly comply with the ongoing nationwide strike by staying home until further notice.
The indefinite strike, declared by the national leadership of TEWU, comes in protest over the government’s continued neglect of non-teaching staff within the country’s education sector.
In a statement read by the Regional Industrial Relations Officer, Madam Phyllis Agyemang, the Union directed staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), public and technical universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board to observe the industrial action.
She explained that the strike became necessary after several failed attempts to resolve key issues through official channels. “We have followed all legal and procedural processes, but our concerns continue to be ignored,” she said.
Key demands of the union include:
- Immediate signing of the agreed Conditions of Service,
- Inclusion of non-teaching staff in the upcoming Continuous Professional Development Allowance,
- Resolution of promotion-related issues,
- Urgent intervention by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to address all outstanding matters.
Eastern Regional TEWU Chairman, Mr. Paul Oduro Nyame, also appealed to the government to prioritize the needs of non-teaching staff and take immediate action to end the standoff.
The strike continues to affect operations in public schools and education-related institutions nationwide.
