UEW accident: Students were returning to school after UTAG strike

A student at the School of Business, South Campus of the University of Education Winneba (EUW), Awudu Mohammed has confirmed that the students who were involved in the accident over the weekend were returning to school after going home during the UTAG strike.

On Sunday dawn, there was a fatal accident at Asuboi, near Suhum on the Accra-Kumasi Highway (N6), involving a Universe commercial bus and a stationary 40-footer-container loaded with wood.

As result of the accident, nine passengers, believed to be students of the University of Education Winneba died on the spot, while others sustained different degrees of injuries.

Confirming the news on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Awudu Mohammed said although school had re-opened earlier, most of the students went home during the strike and they decided to go back to school after UTAG called off its strike.

Unfortunately, these students could not make it back to school because of the accident.

When asked if he had a clue of what caused the accident, he said, “What I heard was that the driver was sleeping.”

Awudu Mohammed said the death of the nine students over the weekend has shocked all students in the school.

“It happened Sunday dawn, yesterday, the school was very quiet, and people were grieving. I am personally very sad because my friend was part,” he said.
