Uniformed man kicking young man in video not police officer -Ghana Police

The Police administration has denied allegations that a uniformed man seen in video kicking one young man who was kneeling before some civilians is a police officer.

According to the police, the uniformed man is a civilian, stating specifically that he is a Metropolitan guard of the Swedru Municipal Assembly.

In a statement signed by the Assistant Superintendent of Police for Director-General/ Public Affairs, Simon Tenku, the police said that, “The person seen kicking the victim in the said video is not a police officer. He is a civilian, a Metropolitan guard of the Swedru Municipal Assembly.”

“Preliminary investigation shows that about 3.p.m on Thursday, 21st March 2019 at Agona Swedru in the Central Region, the victim was arrested by civilians including metropolitan guards of the Swedru Municipal Assembly for an alleged offence.”

“The civilians started assaulting the victim/suspect. However, when the attention of a police officer on duty nearly was drawn to the scene, the officer went to the rescue of the victim and filed a report at the Agona Swedrru Police Station,” it stated.

The police also stated that, “The Police Administration hereby emphasizes that the person seen kicking the victim in the video is not a police officer,” the police added.

The police, however, stated that the matter is being investigated by the Swedru Divisional Command.
