The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) at the University of Ghana is set to host a major scientific symposium on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in honour of the Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA).

Themed “WACCI: Seed to Impact – Highlighting the Journey from Seed Funding to Tangible Outcomes,” the event will showcase the transformative power of agricultural research across West Africa.

The symposium will be held at the WACCI Auditorium and will highlight innovative breakthroughs made possible through seed grants, with a special focus on improving food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural development.

This year’s celebration is especially significant as it coincides with the conclusion of the Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE) Project, which officially ends on June 30, 2025.

The event will be moderated by Mrs. Barbara Dodoo-Arhin, Assistant Registrar at WACCI, and will begin with opening remarks from Prof. Sandow Mark Yidana, Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences.

Professor Eric Yirenkyi Danquah, Founding Director of WACCI and 2022 Africa Food Prize Laureate, will also address participants.

A central part of the programme will feature research presentations by Principal Investigators whose projects were supported by seed funding. Their work demonstrates the real-world impact of scientific investment across both staple and underutilised crops:

Remarks will be delivered by the MP and Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Agriculture, Cocoa and Food, Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, and Dr. Abdou Tenkouano, Director General of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Kenya.

Observed annually on June 30, the Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) celebrates the continent’s rich scientific heritage and the critical role of science, technology, and innovation in its development. WACCI’s symposium aligns with this vision, reaffirming its commitment to advancing research that boosts agricultural productivity, improves nutrition, and supports resilient livelihoods across Africa.
