Youth wanted to destroy government properties- Police on Lamashegu incident

The Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, ACP Akwesi Ofori has noted that the youth of Lamashegu went on rampage when the shooting incident occurred over the weekend.

According to him, after the incident, the youth started rioting and marched to the police station to destroy some properties belonging to the state.

As a result, he said the police and soldiers had to use reinforcement to stop the rioting youth from causing further harm and to protect government’s properties.

Six police Officers were interdicted over the weekend following a shooting incident at Lamashegu in Tamale.Through the shooting, it was reported that one person died while others sustained various degrees of injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the chaos started after a police patrol team allegedly shot and killed a young man driving a white Toyota Camry with a DV number plate after he had refused to stop when the police stopped him.

He is said to have driven to the Chief for cover but was pursued there by the Police.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi simpremu, ACP Akwesi Ofori admitted that through the reinforcement, some persons were injured.

He also confirmed that the six police officers who were involved in the shooting had been interdicted, adding that three CID officers from the CID Headquarters, and three Police Professional Standard Bureau have also assigned three people to join the Tamale Police Command to investigate the role of the patrol team.

“What we are saying is that people should exercise patience while investigations are ongoing. The young men and women at Lamashie and its environs should know that the Police Administration does not encourage violence,” he said.

ACP Akwesi Ofori added that, “The IGP has directed the Regional Police Commander to visit those who were injured and families of those who died and assure them that the Police will ensure justice.”
