$170 M judgment debt: We acted in the interest of Ghana- NDC MP

The Member of Parliament for the Ejura-Sekyedomasi, Mr. Muhammed Bawa Braimah, says the National Democratic Congress administration meant no harm when it signed the power purchasing agreement with the Ghana Power Generation Company (GCGP).

According to him, the generational power in Ghana was very low at the time and therefore they signed the agreement to salvage the situation.

A Commercial Court in London slapped Ghana with the $170 million judgment debt for unlawful termination of the power purchase agreement with the Ghana Power Generation Company (GCGP).

The agreement was cancelled by the Akufo-Addo government based on a recommendation from a committee set up by the Ministry of Energy on orders of the Office of the President to review all power agreements.

Some persons, including the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Mr John Jinapor, have suggested that the former Minister in the person of Mr Boakye Agyarko should be held responsible for causing the $170 million judgement debt to the state.

However, the former Energy Minister, has justified the government’s decision to terminate the power agreement with independent contractor.

He said Ghana is better off with $170m judgement debt, adding that things could have been worse.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie, Mr Muhammed Bawa Braimah said the power purchasing agreement the NDC administration signed is still supporting the country’s power.

“We can provide the document for Ghanaians to know that we did not mean harm for Ghana. At that time, we all knew that our generational capacity was very low and we needed power. As at now, we are experiencing dumsor. If they like, they should touch the other power purchasing agreement the NDC signed and see if we will get power in the country. Switch off Ameri, switch off CalPower and let us see if we will get power,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said there was no need for the said agreement to be cancelled, adding that it was just to make the NDC-government unpopular.

Mr. Muhammed Bawa Braimah added ,”When they came, they were trying to find every fault with every agreement we signed that stopped dumsor. There was no need for this agreement to have been cancelled.”

He also said the NPP-Government could have referred the agreement back to parliament instead of taking the decision at cabinet to terminate the agreement.
