The General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Corporation Council, Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah has urged the public not to pay the new fares being charged by transport operators until further notice.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced few weeks ago that there would be a 20 per cent increment in transport fares by Friday, May 13, 2022.
This was due to the hike in fuel prices which does not seem to be coming down anytime soon.
Earlier, the Union had proposed that the government scrap some taxes on petroleum products but after going back and forth, the Union did not get the desired results.
Due to this, they resorted to increasing transport fares to at least make up for their losses.
Although the GPRTU proposed to increase the fares by Friday, May 13, 2022, some drivers had started charging passengers new fares.
This did not sit well with the leadership of the Ghana Road Transport Corporation Council, hence the caution.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah explained that before there is an increment in transport fares, the stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport, the Consumer Protection Agency, the public and the Operators meet to discuss and arrive at a favourable state.
But this time, he noted that they were not through with their meetings but noticed that some of the operators had started taking the new fares, saying therefore that it was unfair.
He also stated that the 20 per cent increment was exorbitant.
Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah therefore called on the public to disregard the new fuel price.
Meanwhile, he said they will meet with the stakeholders until there is a final position on the matter.
“I am stressing on this, no one should pay the new transport fares until we come back properly,” he said.
