Three teacher unions have declared a sit down strike effective today Friday 4th November 2022.
This move according to the three associations is to register their disappointment over the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The striking unions include National President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).
Announcing the strike at a press conference, President for the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Isaac Owusu indicated that government failed to listen to the unions after the appointment was made.
He said, the unions are fully aware of the new director’s educational background, which doesn’t qualify him to lead them as professionals.

The unions, since the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah on October 19, have opposed the move, arguing that the new GES Director-General does not qualify to occupy the position.
The unions, however, kicked against the 1 year contract extension of Deputy Director of Education, Mr. Anthony Boateng.
“We (Teacher Unions, GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-Gh.) welcome you all warmly to this Press Conference, which marks our 4th November deadline on the appointment of a Banker instead of Educationist as Director General of GES.
‘Today, we announce our next line of action on the termination of the appointment of the Director-General of GES and subsequent appointment of a Banker as the New Director General. The issue which dominated the media space-both print and electronic, over the past fortnight or so,” Isaac Owusu told said.
