The General Secretary for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Godfred Abulbira Adogma says the Union is neither in support of the 30 per cent increment in transport fares, nor against it.
According to him, last year when the various transport unions started complaining about the fuel hikes, they met and pleaded with the Transport Ministry to reduce taxes on fuel but all yielded no results.
At the same time, the GPRTU urged all transport unions to exercise patience and hold on with the increment of transport fares.
Unfortunately, he said after waiting for long, most of the driver unions got angry because nothing concrete had been done about their request.
Due to this, he said they presented a petition to the Ministry that the Unions would increase transport fares by 30 per cent for them to either break even or gain profit if the taxes on fuel were not reduced.
In a latest development, the various unions have decided to increase lorry fares by 30 per cent, due to the hike in fuel prices.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie, with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Godfred Abulbira Adogma said although all the driver unions decided to increase the fares by 30 per cent, it has not yet materialized.
“We have gone for first and second meeting and we are not done with the meetings and so if some of the Unions are saying they will increase the fare, we have nothing to say. That is why I am saying we are in the middle. Yes, we all proposed it but it has not come into effect.”
Meanwhile, he said after a third meeting with the Transport Ministry, the GPRTU will decide on what to do next.
