400k filing fee on the high side – Alban Bagbin

One of the presidential aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2020 elections, Alban Bagbin, says the GHS400,000 filing fee for presidential aspirants is outrageous.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has come under criticisms over GH¢400,000 filing fee for Presidential candidates.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NDC after a meeting on Wednesday 28th November 2018, settled on GH¢20,000 and GH¢400,000 as nomination forms and filing fees for Presidential candidates respectively.

The amount involved has got social media talking, while others are of the view that the sums involved suggests that one must be filthy rich to decide to file to be the presidential candidates for any political party, others have argued that the Presidential race is not for the “weak”.

Notable among the critics is a leading member and outspoken communication member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dela Coffie, who has accused the NDC of selling its presidential ticket to the highest bidder under the pretense of filing fee.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, a presidential aspirant of the NDC, Alban Bagbin explained that in 2012 the filing fee for presidential aspirants was pegged GHS60,000, which moved to GHS100,000 in 2016.

According to him the GHS400,000 as filing fees is overpriced which is in disparity with the party’s social democratic principles.

“we were shocked when we heard the news and we will release a joint statement on Friday 30 November 2018 to express our reservations. It seems NDC is losing its values, losing all its principles and that accounted for what happened in 2016.”, he added.

The NDC will however go to polls on 19th January 2019 to elect its presidential candidate.
