Forty-two students have been enrolled in Entrance University College of Health Sciences to pursue Doctor of Pharmacy programme.
The university, a member of the Tobinco Group, held its first matriculation on Friday at its premises at Spintex close to Entrance Pharmaceuticals and Research Center. It is affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The Chancellor of the University, Elder Samuel Amo Tobbin, explained that six-year programme will offer quality health science training to the students to ensure that they become professionals who will provide excellent services to Ghanaians.
Mr. Tobbin, Group Chairman of the Tobinco Group which includes Abii National, Atinka Media Village, Priority Insurance, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals among others, said students of Entrance University College, as part of their training, will be sent to countries Entrance Pharmaceutical and Research center is operating, to acquire international skills.
‘’Currently Entrance Pharmaceutical and Research center has operations in 12 countries in the sub-region. Students from Entrance University College will have the opportunity to acquire international training and experience in various areas of pharmaceutical business, moreover, the University College will provide access to tertiary education and support the overall national agenda,” he stressed.
He indicated that students are privileged to be part of the university since it is the first private health college to be accredited by KNUST to offer Doctor of Pharmacy programme.
Mr. Tobbin congratulated the students for getting the opportunity to enroll in the university.
The Deputy Minister for Health, Kingsley Aboagye-Gyedu, said as a critical Sector of the economy, the Ministry of Health seeks to improve the health status of all people living in Ghana thereby contributing to Government's vision of universal health coverage and a healthy population.
“The Ministry of Health, working with all stakeholders and more importantly the private sector, aims at improving the human capital thus "creating wealth through health" through the development and implementation of proactive policies that will ensure improved health and vitality. In this light, it is commendable that a fully private institution ‘The Tobinco Group’ led by its visionary Chairman, Mr. Tobbin will invest in providing opportunities for our youth to be trained in such a state-of-art facility to augment the efforts of government’s training institutions,” he said.
He added that Entrance University College of Health Sciences has come at the right time adding, “ over the past 2 years, the government has delivered 7 district hospitals, 5 polyclinics in the Greater Accra Region only and over 1600 CHPS compounds across the country. There has also been a major upgrade, rehabilitation, and retooling of many facilities including the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and the University Medical Centre”.
“As the government continues to build many more hospitals and clinics over the next few years to meet the ever-increasing health needs of citizens, there is the need to train more health professionals especially pharmacists to serve in most of all these facilities across the country. I assure you of government continuing support to the private sector and I will encourage the management of this institution to strive for excellence to parallel the various government pharmacy schools,” the Deputy Minister said.
The Council Chairman of the Entrance University College of Health Sciences, Professor Peter Ohene said, “ ‘This University College is committed to academic, moral and spiritual transformation of students such that upon completion of their programme they will be well prepared, ready to transform society for the better.”
