Enforce policies to protect water bodies- Amb. Samuel Owusu to Govt

Water Bodies

The United Nations (UN) Eminent Peace Ambassador to Ghana, Dr Samuel Ben Owusu has called on the Government to enforce policies that would help protect water bodies in the country.

He observed that numerous water bodies in Ghana have been polluted by human activities such as galamsey, the disposal of refuse, the construction of structures in waterways, and the obstruction of waterways.

The above, he noticed, has become a threat to Ghana’s water, expressing worry that if care is not taken, Ghana may import water or buy water at a very high price in future.

The UN Peace Ambassador gave the warning after his return from the United Nations Global Water Sustainable Conference held in New York.

The United Nations Global Water Sustainable Conference was a three-day event held from March 22nd to March 24th, 2023 in New York

It was aimed at reaffirming the international agreed water-related goals and targets including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Amb. Dr Samuel Owusu represented the West African Mission of the International Association of World Peace Advocate and Ghana respectively.

Right when he returned to Ghana, he spoke with the media at the Kotoka International Airport where he expressed worry over the matter.

He observed that most politicians were behind illegal mining directly or indirectly.

For those who engage in activities that pollute water, bodies he warned them to put a stop to it, stating that they will also be affected in future

Meanwhile, as the General Overseer of The Pottersville Church International, Covenant Christian Leadership College, Dr Samuel Ben Owusu said he was going to use his platform to educate the public on the need to protect water in the country.

He also said he would assist the government with ideas and the knowledge gained on innovations at the conference in order to promote a sustainable developed water system in the country.

We can’t cook with GHC0.97 anymore – Sch. Feeding caterers tell Gov’t

programme

Caterers of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) want urgent increment in the feeding grant, insisting that the amount being allocated by the Government to prepare daily nutritious meals for pupils is woefully insignificant.

According to them, the GHC1.00 is not enough to purchase food items on the market to prepare quality meals and serve in the right quantity for the children, most of whom come to school on empty stomach.

They disclosed that an amount of GHC0.03 is even deducted from source as tax component from each of the GHC1.00 paid to them [caterers].
This implies that the caterers do not receive exactly the GHC1.00, but GHC0.97 per child per day.

Some of the caterers in the Bono East Region complained bitterly to some officials of the Ghana School Feeding Programme and the World Food Programme who had come to the region for a weeklong joint monitoring to assess the performance of the caterers and the impact of the school feeding programme.

The distraught caterers even though appreciated the Government for the introduction of the school feeding programme and the great impact it is making in the lives of millions of Ghanaian children in the deprived schools, they disclosed how it is sometimes inconveniencing most of them.

“We have tried so much to be quiet over the years hoping that something will be done to increase the feeding grant to at least GHC2.00 or GhC2.50 so that we can meet the cost of food items on the market but to no avail. We are crying and crying but nobody seems to hear us out. Prices of items are being increased almost every day, and so the President must know that we cannot go to the market with the same GHc1.00”.

The caterers asserted that a bag of beans which was sold between GhC250.00 and GhC300.00 last year, now sells between GhC800.00 and GhC950.00. A bowl of gari has also moved from GhC6.00 to GhC25.00, a maxi bag of local rice moved from GhC200.00 to GhC450.00 and prices of cooking oil, meat, fish and vegetables have also gone up astronomically especially in the last 6 months.

They indicated that, even though it is a policy direction for all the caterers to patronize locally produced foodstuffs from the local farmers, almost all the caterers prefer the imported foods because they are far cheaper.

The caterers said that some of them are still managing to cook for the school children because the imported food suppliers are always willing to supply food and other items like tin tomatoes, cooking oil and canned fish to them on credit, unlike the local farmers.

They also raised serious concern about the long delay in the payment of their arrears by the government, which they indicated, put them under unnecessary pressure.

“We are supposed to pre-finance the cooking for just one term and receive payment the following term. But for a long time now, the government always fails to pay us on time; and most at times we do not receive our payment in full. Sometimes instead of 66 cooking days’ arrears, the government can decide to pay us 20, 25 or 30 days and we will have to struggle for a long time before we will receive the remaining payments. And because we have to pay our cooks and suppliers at all cost, we always have to go and borrow from different sources, which put us in an uncomfortable situation”.

In reaction to the concerns raised by the caterers, the GSFP National Coordinator Mrs. Gertrude Quashigah appealed to the caterers to calm down and exercise restraint, noting that everything is being done towards the upwards adjustment of the feeding grant.

She said management of GSFP has been engaging the government for a while now on the issue. According to her, the GSFP has submitted a compelling proposal to the government through the supervisory ministry for an upward adjustment of the feeding grant.

Mrs. Quashigah further revealed that between GHC2.00 and GHC3.00 has been proposed taken into account the prevailing economic trend in the country. She expressed optimism that government would respond positively to the proposal.
She recalled that in 2018 government accepted GSFP’s proposal and increased the feeding grant from GHp.80 to GHC1.00. She therefore assured the caterers and Ghanaians in general that government is genuinely committed to the sustainability of the programme.

Akufo-Addo grants presidential pardon to Abuga Pele over ill-health

The former Member of Parliament for Chiana/Paga, Abuga Pele, has received a presidential pardon.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted the presidential pardon to him on grounds of ill-health.

He was admitted at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the hospital but has since been discharged, the report said.

Abuga Pele, who was an MP for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was sentenced to a six-year imprisonment by an Accra High Court in 2018.

The court found him guilty of causing financial loss to the state while serving as the National Coordinator of the defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA).

Boyfriend’s Day: The Little Things That Stay With Us

Boyfriend’s Day: The Little Things That Stay With Us

Since today is National Boyfriend’s Day, I couldn’t help but think back to a quiet day that still makes me smile. It was New Year’s Eve, and as the clock struck midnight, my phone buzzed. The very first message that came through was from him, just four simple words: “Happy New Year, Angel.”(he affectionately called me that.) No emojis, no drama, just a soft reminder that I was on his mind at the very start of the year.

Funny how it’s often the little things that stay with us. Not always the big gifts or the grand dates, but the moments where someone chooses you in silence, when no one else is watching. That single midnight text meant more than a thousand fireworks in the sky, and it still lingers in my memory today. Where are we both now?… I don’t know what to call it…

Why Boyfriend’s Day Matters

For some, Boyfriend’s Day might sound like just another excuse for social media trends, but its importance goes deeper.

1.It’s a reminder that men, too, deserve to be celebrated.

In relationships, boyfriends often play the quiet roles, providing support, sharing laughter, and standing strong when times are tough.

2. Boyfriend’s Day gives people a chance to pause and say, “I see you, and I appreciate you.”

It’s not about expensive gifts or flashy surprises; it’s about recognition. In the same way Valentine’s Day celebrates love broadly, Boyfriend’s Day puts a spotlight on the men whose efforts often go unnoticed.

3. It balances the love equation
We celebrate Valentine’s Day, Girlfriend’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day… so why not Boyfriends? This day creates space to show appreciation for men in relationships, reminding them they are valued, too.

4. It deepens connections

Taking a moment to appreciate your partner, even with something as small as a heartfelt message, strengthens bonds. Boyfriend’s Day isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about reminding each other that love and effort matter.
Taking a moment to appreciate

And maybe that’s why it matters, because at the end of the day, everyone deserves to feel special, even for just one day.

So, tell me: what’s the little thing someone once did for you that you’ve never forgotten?

Awutu Senya West MP Urges Students to Shun Drugs, Donates Trunks and Mattresses to Freshers

Awutu Senya West MP Urges Students to Shun Drugs, Donates Trunks and Mattresses to Freshers

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya West, Mrs. Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, has advised newly admitted Senior High School (SHS) students to stay away from drugs and remain focused on their studies.

She gave the advice during a presentation of 200 trunks and 200 mattresses to freshers at the district office. The gesture, she explained, was to reduce the financial burden on vulnerable parents as they prepare their children for school.

Mrs. Tetteh Agbotui expressed concern over reports of some students experimenting with drugs upon entering SHS, stressing that early guidance was key to preventing such behavior. “Your future depends on the choices you make today,” she told the students.

The MP also noted that while her office had previously supported parents with cash, this year she chose to provide essential school items that would directly benefit students.

Parents at the event welcomed the support, with one describing it as “timely” and affirming that electing the MP had not been in vain. Some of the beneficiaries also expressed gratitude for the assistance.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Awutu Senya West, Mr. Nyamekye Kalala Eghan, commended the initiative. He explained that it formed part of the broader “Back to School” project, which also includes scholarship opportunities for tertiary students.

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman has underscored the need for greater dignity, inclusion, and support for persons with different abilities, urging that they be allowed to live fulfilling lives without undue pressures.

Addressing the launch of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the International Day of Older Persons, she stressed that society must extend compassion and empathy not only to those with disabilities but also to older persons and people living with illness.

“True empowerment lies in treating every individual with dignity and ensuring the right support systems are in place for them to thrive,” she said. Prof. Opoku Agyeman emphasized that persons with different abilities should not be defined by limitations, but should be given opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society and enjoy the same respect as others.

She further encouraged communities and institutions to adopt a culture of hope and encouragement, noting that positivity and support can improve the quality of life for such individuals.

President Charges Newly Sworn-in Justices to Uphold Courage, Integrity, and Humility

Court of Appeal

President John Dramani Mahama has called on newly sworn-in Justices of the Court of Appeal to embody courage, integrity, and humility as they take up their critical roles in safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

Delivering his address at the Jubilee House to swear in the newly 20 appeal court judges the President emphasized that justice is not a luxury but the very foundation of Ghana’s vision for shared prosperity.

He noted that the government’s broader infrastructure and development agenda cannot thrive unless anchored in a strong, fair, and independent judiciary.

“My Lords and Ladies, Justices, as you assume your new roles, I ask you to carry these three virtues,” the President declared. “Courage to resist pressure, whether political or financial, and to uphold the law even when it is unpopular. Integrity to ensure that justice cannot be bought, delayed, or bent by influence. And humility to remember that your power is not for self, but for service to the people.”

Galamsey Fight Requires National Commitment – Bright Essilfie Kumi

Bright Essilfie Kumi

The CEO of Transglobal Media and aspiring First National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon. Bright Essilfie Kumi, has called for a more comprehensive and united national approach to tackle illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s “Oman Mu Nsem” hosted by Nana Owoahen Acheampong, he expressed deep concern over the worsening impact of galamsey on Ghana’s water bodies and public health. He cited recent closures of water treatment plants, such as the Kwanyako facility in the Central Region, due to excessive pollution levels.

According to Hon. Essilfie, both past and present governments have failed to show consistent leadership in addressing the issue. He criticized the current NDC-led administration for what he called a lack of seriousness in fighting the menace, despite earlier promises. “If we don’t take urgent action, Ghana is heading towards environmental disaster,” he warned.

He highlighted reports of rising heavy metal contamination in rivers like Ankobra and Pra, posing serious health threats and affecting food production. “What we are facing is slow death. Our forests are gone, our water is poisonous, and our people are suffering,” he lamented.

Hon. Essilfie urged the President to declare a State of Emergency in affected areas and enforce existing laws. He also appealed to traditional leaders to take charge of mining communities and help identify those destroying the land.

Commenting on allegations involving political figures in illegal mining activities, he said such cases must be investigated thoroughly, regardless of political affiliation. “If anyone breaks the law, they must be held accountable. Let’s not set dangerous precedents for future governments,” he added.

He concluded with a call for unity: “Let us join hands and save our country. Ghana can thrive again if we all commit to doing what is right.”

Afia Schwazenegger Threatens To Expose NDC Secrets If Mahama Fails to Release Nana Agradaa

Afia Schwazenegger Threatens To Expose NDC Secrets If Mahama Fails to Release Nana Agradaa

The campaign for the release of Evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, Agradaa, has taken a dramatic turn. After social media activist Afia Schwarzenegger warned that she would reveal “secrets” of the  National Democratic Congress (NDC) if its leader, President John Mahama, fails to free Agradaa.

Afia, who has been leading the #FreeNanaAgradaa movement online, first made headlines days ago when she held a passionate prayer session on TikTok. During the broadcast, she urged her followers to spread the hashtag across social media to draw attention to Agradaa’s detention. Despite the campaign, Agradaa remains in custody.

Frustrated by the lack of progress, Afia escalated her rhetoric, directly addressing Mahama. “Mahama should release Nana Agradaa or I will release their secrets,” she declared in a video now circulating on social media.

The warning adds political tension to an already controversial case. Supporters describe Agraadaa as a transformed woman of God, while critics remain skeptical of her ministry and past practices.

Meanwhile, observers have pointed out that Mahama’s leadership has previously overseen reforms aimed at improving prison conditions. Notably, the daily feeding fee for prisoners was increased from just ₵1.80 pesewas to ₵5.00 cedis, a move seen as a step toward humane treatment in Ghana’s correctional facilities.

As of the time of writing, neither John Mahama nor the NDC has issued an official response to Afaia’s warning. Agradaa’s family and legal team have also remained silent on the matter.

The #FreeNanaAgradaa campaign continues to trend online, as Ghanaians watch closely to see whether Afia will follow through on her threat, or if the NDC will respond before the controversy deepens further.
