A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and aspiring National First Vice Chairman, Bright Essilfie Kumi, has called for a major shake-up within the party to position it for victory in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Oman Mu Nsem hosted by Nana Owoahene Acheampong, Bright Essilfie Kumi emphasized the need for a “political revolution” in the NPP, starting with leadership renewal and stronger grassroots engagement.
“We need to fix the party now. The time has come to rebuild, reconnect with the base, and elect new leaders who can lead the party back to power,” – he said.
Bright Essilfie Kumi criticized the current party leadership, blaming them for the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections. According to him, some party executives have had their turn and should not be allowed to impose candidates on delegates.
“Every season has its leaders. We need fresh faces and bold leadership, not recycled officials who were part of our recent defeat,” he stated.
He also stressed that the party must return to its core democratic values, allowing open competition in internal elections without favoritism or coercion. “Let the grassroots decide. No one should be forced on the party.”
Touching on internal communication, Bright Essilfie Kumi lamented the neglect of party communicators and the lack of strategic messaging, which he said contributed to public disconnection. He proposed the establishment of a party communication institute to train and equip spokespeople at all levels.
Bright Essilfie Kumi also urged the party to revisit its external branches, particularly the diaspora, and to better harness their energy and resources.
On unity, he called for calm in the party’s internal discourse. “The insults and personal attacks during internal contests must stop. They only divide us and give our opponents ammunition,” he warned.
Reflecting on the NPP’s achievements in government—including Free SHS and 1D1F—Mr. Kumi said these successes were not enough to secure victory due to weak party structures and grassroots neglect.
“We focused too much on building the nation and not enough on building the party. That must change if we want to win again,” he said.
Mr. Essilfie Kumi, a former National Organizer aspirant and diaspora mobilization leader in the U.S., expressed his readiness to serve as First Vice Chairman, promising to work closely with TESCON and grassroots structures across all 275 constituencies.
He concluded by calling for serious introspection within the NPP. “We must learn from our past, take responsibility, and chart a new path. Only then can we make the NPP bright again and ready for 2028.”
