Chaos at Vetting: Speaker must take actions to redeem image of Parliament – NDC, NPP pundits

Following the lifting of a ban by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin on some Members of Parliament (MPs) who were involved in the chaos during the ministerial vetting, some political pundits have called on the Speaker to take charge and punish those MPs according to the laws of the land.

Speaking on the Atinka 104.7 FM’s political show, “Simpieso”, hosted by Owuahene Acheampong, these pundits from both NDC, NPP and LPG were of the belief that a lot must be done to redeem the image of the parliamentary institution.

Haruna Amaliba of the NDC said he was very disappointed to see the MPs behaving like children live on national television.

He made mention of what happened in the 2012 election petition, where some individuals were hulled before the supreme court following their comment against the supreme court.

To him, causing damage to state property is a crime but we saw our Honorable continually breaking the laws thinking they are above the law.

The communicator was not happy over the decision of the Speaker, saying he must fault them to apologize to all Ghanaians and even sign a bond of good behaviour.

He later called for all those MPs to be marked red-flag for them to be voted out since they do not fit to be called members of parliament, and again bill them to pay for the cost of all the damaged equipment.

According to him, lifting the suspension on these MPs is not enough.

Meanwhile, the Director of Current Ghana Group, Samuel Aryeequaye Barron says, the speaker must do more to redeem the image of Parliament.

He said one of the core mandates of the MPs is to foster unity and development but are rather throwing tables, adding that such behaviours expose who they are as MPs.

Samuel Aryeequaye Barron made reference to one Christopher Sokpa who smashed vehicles in parliament and was given five years imprisonment, questioning why the MPs who destroyed state equipment are left to go free.

Henry Opoku Ware, a Law Researcher and National Communications Team Member of the NPP on his part noted that, parliament this time is bedeviled with much bad news which is very alien to Ghana’s parliament.

According to him, it was very disappointing and disgraceful to see respected Members of Parliament putting up such behaviourS in parliament.

To him, at their positions as MPs in their respective constituencies, they must not wait for anyone to teach them what is wrong and right as they all have wives and children and even family at home watching them behave like children in parliament.

Henry Opoku Ware has therefore called on the Speaker and the Attorney General to charge the MPs with causing financial loss to the state for destroying state assets even on live television.
