Experts have identified informed career choices and the development of practical skills measures for tackling youth unemployment and improving employability in Ghana.
The call was made during a career guidance and relationship counselling programme organised by the Path & Heart Foundation for senior high school and tertiary students in Kumasi.
Speaking to Atinka News reporter Obofo Michael, the Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Nightingale Akuah Afriyie, said many young people complete their education without acquiring the practical skills required to compete effectively in the job market.
She explained that the programme was designed to help students make informed career decisions while encouraging them to develop vocational, technical and entrepreneurial skills before completing their education.
According to her, combining academic qualifications with practical skills will not only enhance employability but apeople’s employabilitypower them to create jobs for themselves through entrepreneurship.
Mrs Afriyie urged students to take advantage of skills development opportunities, stressing that career success depends on continuous learning and adaptability.
Also speaking at the event, the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Emmanuel Reagan Fynn, said the Authority is rolling out initiatives aimed at strengthening skills development among students and graduates.
He disclosed that the NSA will launch a new programme in October 2026 to equip young people with practical, industry-relevant skills to enhance their employability and support efforts to reduce unemployment.
The programme, he noted, forms part of broader efforts to bridge the gap between education and the demands of the labour market while preparing the next generation for meaningful employment and entrepreneurship.
