The Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Akwasi Gyentua, has called on the government to provide special education support for the children of teachers.
He said teachers were given special consideration during recruitment, but similar support was not provided for their children.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the Atinka Teachers Forum at the Sika Hall in Accra, Mr Gyentua said the government should consider covering the cost of education for teachers’ children from the basic level to the highest level.
He argued that such support would make the teaching profession more attractive and give teachers greater motivation to remain in the profession.
According to him, money alone could not make teaching a rewarding career, as teachers needed other benefits that recognised their contribution to society.
“If it is all about money, people can move away to make better money elsewhere. But something must be there to make teaching profitable,” he said.
Mr Gyentua also called for a change in the mindset of teachers, urging them to measure their success not only by financial gains but also by the positive impact they make in society.
He encouraged teachers to continue improving their knowledge and skills, saying the profession offered several opportunities for personal and professional growth.
He noted that teachers could also pursue other professions and careers alongside teaching.
Mr Gyentua further urged teachers to remain united despite political differences, stressing that political parties would come and go but teachers would remain part of the education system.
He called on teachers to renew their commitment to the profession, remain motivated and help improve the public image of teaching.
