Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Philip Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, has promised to pay every unemployed youth and elderly person in Ghana a monthly allowance of GH¢500 if elected President in the 2028 general election.
Speaking on Atinka FM, Roman Fada said Ghana has enough resources to support its citizens if those resources are properly managed and used for the benefit of the people.
He argued that elderly people who have contributed to the development of the country deserve to be supported by the state in their old age. He also said unemployed young people should not be left to suffer because unemployment is often not their choice.
His promise comes at a time when unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, remains a major national concern. The Ghana Statistical Service estimates that the national unemployment rate averaged about 12.8 per cent during the first three quarters of 2025, while unemployment among persons aged 15 to 35 stood at about 21.9 per cent. Nearly two million young people were also classified as not being in education, employment or training.
The situation has triggered growing concern among politicians, lawyers, civil society actors and policy analysts.
Lawyer and social commentator Martin Kpebu is among several public figures who have repeatedly warned about the dangers of widespread youth unemployment, arguing that leaving a large number of young people without jobs and economic opportunities could pose serious social and security risks to the country.
Roman Fada believes his proposed monthly allowance could also compel the government to take job creation more seriously.
According to him, when the state begins spending huge amounts to support unemployed people, it will be forced to create more employment opportunities and reduce the number of people depending on government assistance.
