The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has extended the closure of borders by four more weeks.
The ban takes effect on 4th May 1am and ends on 31st May 2020.
He said the extension of the border closure is to ensure that there is no risk of importation of COVID-19 into the country.
The President during his seventh address to the nation on Sunday, April 19, 2020 announced a two week extension of the closure of Ghana’s borders Sunday, April 19, 2020 to 4th May 2020.
“As has been established, the overwhelming majority of confirmed cases have come from travelers or from people who have come into contact with travelers.
It is, therefore, incumbent on us to continue to be vigilant about travelers into our country until further notice…I have, thus, signed an Executive Instrument, to extend the closure of our borders for two (2) more weeks, beginning Monday, 20th April,” the President added.
The President speaking at the virtual May Day celebration at the studios of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, said government has taken the decision to extend further the closure of borders for a month.
“With the suspension of all public gathering still in force and our schools closed government has taken the decision to extend further the closure of our borders for a month effective 1am on Monday 4th May 2020 until Sunday 31st May 2020. We know that the overwhelming majority of positive cases came from travelers or contact of travelers so we have no option but to keep our borders closed until we are confident that we have put in place measures to prevent travelers from importing the virus”, He said.
According to the President, these restrictions are not permanent features of the lives of Ghanaians but they are essential to the survival of all.
He reiterated that the government is taking measures to outline steps to bring the country to normalcy.Ghana | Atinkaonline.com | Vivian Adu Boatemaa
