NPP to Petition Chief Justice Over Abronye’s Nine-Day Remand

NPP to Petition Chief Justice Over Abronye’s Nine-Day Remand

The New Patriotic Party has announced plans to petition Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie over what it describes as misconduct by the judge who presided over Circuit Court 9 in the case involving the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.

According to the party, the decision follows what it considers unfair treatment of Abronye during the legal proceedings, particularly his nine-day remand in custody.

The NPP argues that the circumstances surrounding the case warranted bail from the beginning rather than detention.

Addressing the media after court proceedings on Wednesday, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, disclosed that the party would formally petition the Chief Justice on Friday, May 22, to investigate the conduct of the presiding judge.

His comments came shortly after the court granted Abronye bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties following days of legal arguments over his detention.

According to the NPP, the decision to remand Abronye was unjustified and amounted to an abuse of judicial discretion.

The party further alleged that the conduct of the judge throughout the proceedings appeared prejudicial and unfair toward the Bono Regional Chairman.

Party officials insist Abronye should not have spent nine days in custody, arguing that the handling of the matter raises broader concerns about fairness and impartiality within the judicial process.

Abronye is currently facing charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace and publication of false news. The charges reportedly stem from comments he allegedly made against a Circuit Court judge in a viral social media video.

The case has generated significant political debate, with the NPP accusing state institutions of targeting some of its leading members, while prosecutors maintain that the matter remains strictly a criminal case before the court.
