The Chairman of the Tobinco Group of Companies, Elder Samuel Nana Amo Tobbin I has fulfilled his promise of producing Hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of covid-19 patients in Ghana and beyond.
In May 2020, he gave the government an assurance that the Entrance Pharmaceuticals and Research Centre, a leading producer of pharmaceutical products in West Africa will produce Hydroxychloroquine drugs, adding that it will be ready for use by early June.
This is the first time hydroxychloroquine is being produced in the the West Africa Sub-Region.
COVID-19 patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are said to recover quickly but the drugs were not available locally on a large scale, aside from the cost of drug shooting up on the international market.
All too soon, the drugs are ready and have been presented to the government on June 17th 2020 for the treatment of vocid-19 patients.

In an interview at a short ceremony to present the drugs to the Ministry of Health in Accra, Nana Amo Tobbin noted that before the (EXIM Bank) partnership, the company had decided to produce hydroxychloroquine and other drugs to support the government in the fight against covid-19.
He also made it known that due to the scarcity of the drug, some African countries had already contacted the company to produce the drug for them.

However, he stated that the company was looking up to the funding as promised by government to enable the company produce more for local consumption, before it can supply the other countries with the drug.
Meanwhile, Nana Amo Tobbin cautioned that the hydroxychloroquine should only be taken under a doctor’s prescription and not for counter sales.
