Former President John Dramani Mahama has refuted coup allegations peddled by New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Bono Regional chairman.

Mr. Kwame Baffoe Alias Abronye DC was arrested by the Ghana Police for alleging that former President John Mahama was planning to stage a coup in Ghana.

The Bono Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party in an interview is reported to have said former President John Mahama had met with Al-Qaeda militants to engage them on how to stage a coup and overthrow the governing party.

Abronye DC made the comment while responding to the arrest of #FixTheCountry convenor, Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor.

Abronye DC, has been granted bail of ¢100,000 with two sureties after appearing before an Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday16th February 2022.

He has been charged with publication of false news, offensive conduct conducive to breach of peace.

The case has been adjourned to March 9.

However, a statement signed and dated February 16 2022 by the Special Aide to Mr Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, said Mahama has not met with any group of people, let alone a terrorist group, to plot to stage a coup d’etat.

She maintained that President Mahama is very well known, both in Ghana and internationally, as a democrat and a strong believer in strengthening democracy not only in Ghana but across the continent of Africa.

“I have been instructed by former President John Dramani Mahama to respond to yet another publication of false and concocted stories by one Kwame Baffoe also known as Abronye from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“HE John Dramani Mahama has not met with any group of people, let alone a terrorist group, to plot to stage a coup d’etat. President Mahama is very well known, both in Ghana and internationally, as a democrat and a strong believer in strengthening democracy not only in Ghana but across the continent of Africa. Therefore, any attempt to align or associate him with anti-democratic activities, acts of destabilization, and abuse of human and other rights, cannot be true.
“This further clarification, despite reports of a police action against the said Abronye, is simply to re-emphasise President Mahama’s integrity and democratic credentials,” Joyce Bawah Mogtari added.
