Lawyer Nkrabea Effah Darteh, has asked the former President, John Dramani Mahama, to apologize over his politicized judiciary comment.
This comment by the astute lawyer comes after former President John Mahama stated that most of the governance institutions have been politicized, citing the judiciary as an example.
John Mahama stated that it is only in Ghana that a Supreme Court will make a decision that a birth certificate is not proof of citizenship.
He stated that although the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has no problem with the judiciary, he believes it is necessary for some internal reforms to take place there.
“Most of the governance institutions have been politicized. I give the example of the judiciary. It is only in Ghana that a Supreme Court will make a decision that a birth certificate is not proof of citizenship. We do have problems with the judiciary, I must say. I think that it is necessary for some internal reforms to take place there. It is necessary for the Chief Justice or whoever is responsible to make some reforms.”
“There are many such funny judgments that have been given. I remember at one time, our colleague Professor Raymond Atuguba said that from a research he had done, judges turn to give their judgments in favour of the political party or leader that appointed them.
“He was subjected to such a whirlwind of indignation by the judiciary but if you bring it down to what is happening today, and you look at it and see who appointed who, you will find that there was some truth in the research,” John Mahama added.
The former President made these comments while addressing the US Chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Bentley University over the weekend.

Reacting to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Lawyer Nkrabea Effah Darteh says the Former President erred in his comment.
According to him, the Supreme Court is the conscience of every nation and that its unacceptable to describe them as bias or politicized.
“It’s sad that a former President can make such a statement in front of foreigners. There is no truth in what he said. He needs to apologize for the comment. It was in bath taste”, Lawyer Nkrabea Effah Darteh told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
